Blogging My Own Exhibition On Etsy
Thank goodness, by running Last Dance Vintage on Etsy like I would use a blog allows me a way to use my curatorial training and express my artistic energies on a daily basis. And how lucky I am that I can endlessly indulge in my lifetime obsession: collecting vintage clothing. I developed this madness early on while I was a cash poor fashion conscious teen growing up in the 1970s in Manhattan, and have never stopped since. Now, when I am on the search for finds, I am thinking through the process of listing it on Etsy: how a piece evokes a certain period in fashion history, how I can creatively style it for a photo shoot, and what distinctive features it possesses that I will highlight in it's description.
I always thought I would end up a museum curator, but despite earning a PhD. in Folklore/Folklife with a focus on Performance Studies and Material Culture, it never happened. I think I am just too much of an independent spirit to follow the protocol required by a museum. Instead, every time I list a piece of fashion in my Etsy shop, I approach it like I am writing up a label for my own gallery exhibition. What could be better: I have my own ongoing exhibition by running an Etsy shop! I love the creative process involved in photo shoots as I explore different ways that I can "make art" while displaying fashion.
Plus, unlike the objects in a museum, my exhibition entries get to keep moving through the world! I get so much satisfaction from finding just the perfect destination for the garments I have discovered. I love sending fashion all over the USA and all around the world, and knowing that it is embarking on a whole new chapter somewhere wonderful! What could be better: I practically feel like a world traveler through the sales that I make in my shop!
How lucky I am that, thanks to Etsy, I can do all this out of the comfort of my home! I live in a rambling stone house built in the 1920s and the sleeping porch is my photo studio. My teenage son, Chris, is a good photographer, and I should add, a very good sport. He offers a non judgmental eye and puts up with my model antics. Thankfully, he is willing to pull out the camera at random moments when the light is just right. I treasure the times when he gets into the spirit of the shoot and we have fun together. As for all those tiny vintage dresses? My invaluable model Yu-Wen is not only beautiful, but a track star and a size 2. What would I do without her?
