I can't express how disappointed I am with this shop. I tried everything I possibly could to allow Laura to rectify the situation, and she did not. Laura has a sweet demeanor about her, but she ruined my dream wedding invitations and I wish I could go back in time to warn myself to never use her in the first place. I ended up sending out e-vites to my wedding because she never delivered. Her work was so poor, I'm surprised she even took on my project. I'd respect her so much more if she had told me upfront she is not capable of producing what I asked for. More than that, simple things like using gold in the design, which I asked for specifically AND sent example images of, were just completely disregarded. Did she even read my request? Now, she won't refund my money, so I'm having to deal with disputing the charge. Despicable.

It was such a pleasure working with Laura on my wedding save the dates. She was so patient throughout the entire process and made sure that the final product was everything I envisioned. It was a true custom project and I am so thrilled with the outcome. I really look forward to working on more projects with her!

About

Heirloom Quality Hand Calligraphy & Illustration by Laura Lavender

Hello! I'm an artist from Vancouver Island, Canada. I have worked as a calligrapher and illustrator since 2008. In that time, I have designed for greeting card companies, big brands, lettered for book publishers and fashion designers.... and lots of awesome people having parties! I'm co-author of the book "Creative Lettering & Beyond," published by Walter Foster. I am also a Craftsy instructor... my Class is titled "modern pointed pen with Laura Lavender!"

A little bit about me.... I love art by Alphonse Mucha, bicycles, historical romance novels, tea parties, and wild gardens. I have a degree in Fine Arts and have lived an artful life!! Last but most certainly not least, I have the most wonderful musician husband, I am the mama of two sweet children (bébé 3 on the way June 2017!!!) & two darling doggies! We live in a victorian farm house in the 'warmland' of Vancouver island.

If I'm not in my studio, one can usually find me in the garden!

Frequently asked questions

TIME LINE FOR ORDERING EVENT CALLIGRAPHY

Thinking of your timing? Here is a suggested time line by wedding experts in regards to addressing and mailing of wedding invitations: Envelopes should be delivered to the calligrapher at least 3 months in advance of wedding. Invitations should be mailed 6 to 8 weeks in advance of wedding.

Also, I always advise clients to have the post office hand cancel your stamps, as the machine can damage the envelopes!

If you are interested in hiring a wedding calligrapher, be sure to contact them well in advance of your dates - at certain times of the year, we are booked months in advance!

NAMES AND ADDRESSES FOR ADDRESSING WORK

For envelope addressing, place cards or seating cards:

Please send name and address information in a word document format, saved as PDF.

"&" OR "AND"?
- Let me know if you prefer "&" or "and."

ESCORT CARDS

ENVELOPE ADDRESSING
- Please list addresses in this format for envelope addressing:

Please let me know if you have any questions about addressing or invitation etiquette!

EXTRA STATIONERY FOR ADDRESSING WORK

For Addressing work: Please provide around 15-20% additional materials as calligraphy is a "human process" that can sometimes have a slip of the pen nib!
(For example, if 100 envelopes are being addressed, please send me around 120. I can keep a few extra after your order is completed if you think you may have changes to your guest list.)

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO COMPLETE MY ORDER?

The time I need to complete an order varies greatly depending on the details of the order; however here are some guidelines to give you an idea:

ENVELOPE ADDRESSING:
Please allow one week per one hundred envelopes.

NAME / TABLE CARD ORDERS:
Please allow three to five days for your order.

MAP DESIGNS:
These projects generally require up to two weeks.

INVITATION DESIGNS:
Please allow one week.

LOGO DESIGNS:
Please allow at least two weeks.

All hand lettered items require one full day drying time to avoid nasty smudges!

IS THERE A RUSH FEE OPTION?

Yes! Please be in touch prior to placing your order if you need your items right away. Depending on my schedule, I am sometimes able to accommodate rush orders.

Rush orders have a 25% rush fee added.

HOW MANY REVISIONS ARE INCLUDED IN MY CUSTOM ORDER?

When you order a custom design (such as a map, invitation, crest or menu, etc.) your order includes two changes / alterations /additions to the design. If I have made a spelling mistake (yes, it does happen!) then that fix is not counted as a revision.

Any additional changes / alterations /additions to your design are at a fee of $25 each, and are dependant upon my current schedule.

HOW DO I HAVE MY CUSTOM DESIGN PRINTED?

Here is the process for listings in which you are commissioning a custom design: I create your custom calligraphy design with pen & ink; once the ink is dry, I have the piece scanned at a high resolution. This high resolution file is then sent to you, or the stationer of your choice, for printing. The files are delivered via Hightail, so be sure to supply your email address.

WHAT SIZE CAN YOU MAKE MY CUSTOM COMMISSION?

I like to use standard North American frame sizes to facilitate framing.

8" x 10"
11" x 14"
16" x 20"
20" x 24"
24" x 36"
30" x 40"

What details do you need to make my custom map design?

Please send the names and addresses of the locations you would like included on your map. Which elements would you like illustrated? Please send an image or link of those locations, if possible.

We can also have fun with your map design, so feel free to personalize it. What sort of a title would you like? Want to include your favourite restaurant? Best spot to view the sunset? Best late-night dancing? We can make your map funky or formal - it's up to you!
