Each of these paintings uses gems and precious stones like lapis lazuli, azurite, and ochre ground into paint mixed with gouache, and 22K gold. They are paintings of Tibetan and Hindu deities, based on centuries old traditional iconography, brought to life with a contemporary hand, each one with a story to tell, a life lesson to be learned.
I also write - whimsical cheerful stories, always with tongue in cheek bits of wisdom from the classics peppering the pages. On Etsy you can buy her coloring books, - "5 Secrets of the River Qi", and O Deity Divine!, and a divination deck based on her paintings and writings.
❀
When Laura isn't painting she can be found meditating, walking along a river out in the wilds of Oregon or gardening. Painting focuses the heart and mind on stillness - its a really good feeling, experiencing that while making something of beauty. I hope you enjoy these works.

How I came to paint like a medieval thangka painter
I began painting 22 years ago after admiring the antique thangkas and Indian miniatures that devotees of my spiritual teacher owned. They were completely unlike any art I’d ever seen, coming from a childhood growing up in Midwest America, and the colors, stylized figures and creatures, and compositions were very beautiful to me.
"Thangkas art" is a style of painting Buddhist deities that began around 1300 years ago - well, hard to put a date on a culture's evolving love of painting religious deities, but something like that. They are created on fabric so that they can be rolled up - a handy quality in art for a nomadic culture.
Indian miniatures are small exquisitely detailed paintings of scenes of court life and deity art.
I began studying meditation and yoga and that brought me closer to the art. After having a lot of fun decorating a party with a bunch of artist friends and painting big “thangkas” on old bedsheets, hanging them in trees and everywhere else, I realized I could paint like these paintings I loved so much. I got a commission from that party art, and then just kept going from there.
You can feel the energy scintillate, quietly and peacefully, in old thangkas —- years of use in monasteries, painted in an ancient time before electricity and the intensity of technology and rapid change created a whirlwind in our minds.... They really inspire me.
I hope the giclée prints of my paintings and drawings have a tiny bit of that stillness and peace in them.... Welcome to my shop!
Laura
PS: I Don't paint in standard sizes. Consequently all the sizes you can pick from on my shop listings are APPROXIMATE - so its best to wait to buy frames until you have the art in hand.

I love to paint Hindu and Buddhist deity art, and lately have made pen and ink illustrated books inspired by them. I share these ancient art forms through the giclee prints I sell and my coloring books "O Deity Divine! & "5 Secrets of the River Qi".

Sizing details
The print sizes listed under "Options" are not standard framing sizes. I don't paint on standardized sized canvases, so each artwork is APPROXIMATELY the measurements listed. This is true for all prints except the $20 5"x 7" prints - (they ARE 5x7") and a few of the prints that are available only in one small size, like 3x4", or 6x6".
