for the past 39 years I've lived and studied at a retreat center called The Movement Center in Oregon, USA, dedicated to the study of meditation and yoga. The halls are lined with rich beautiful antique and contemporary Buddhist thangka art.

I've been enjoying painting these images of Tibetan and Hindu deities for the past 15 years or so and am thinking of exploring painting Vedic astrology charts, and other forms of Asian artmaking. I enjoy using mineral paints like lapis lazuli mixed with gouache, and 22K gold. I've been pretty formal in the past, but I'm loosening up and want to try new things, new techniques -keep an eye on my shop!

I also like to write - whimsical cheerful stories, always with a little tongue in cheek bits of wisdom peppering the pages. Currently I'm preparing a downloadable calendar of stories, each to be pared with a coloring book page. Check out my small book in my shop for a longer story - "5 Secrets of the River Qi".

When I am not painting I can be found walking along a river out in the wilds of Oregon or raking the paths around the ashram, cooking breakfast for 35 there, or looking online at some fun art form like Japanese paper mache toys. And meditating. Painting focuses my heart and mind on stillness - its a really good feeling, experiencing that while making something of beauty. I hope you enjoy my work.

I received this lovely piece in a mail recently and I am very pleased as it is a gift for my doula. When I gave this to her, she was blown away as was I. The image is the perfect size, the colors just right and it arrived in pristine condition, packaged quite nicely. Thank You. My doula loved her gift. :)

Laura was so incredibly helpful in expediting delivery of the print that I ordered. When it arrived I was extremely pleased with the high quality heavy stock paper that Laura used, which resulted in a print with vibrant colors, and clean lines that had no blurring or bleed-through (which can happen if lesser quality paper is used). Laura is an incredibly talented artist and a real gem to deal with -- my highest possible recommendation.

About

Falling in love with Buddhist Thangka and Hindu Deity Painting

I think these two art forms are sublime! I began painting about 15 years ago after admiring antique thankgas for years. A "thangka" is a painting created on flexible fabric, made to be rolled up - a handy quality for a nomadic culture. I study meditation and yoga and that has been the source of it all.... The Movement Center, where I live, is dedicated to helping people grow as individuals into their highest selves. The halls are lined with beautiful museum quality Asian art. You can feel the energy scintillate in them.... years of use in monasteries, and painted in an ancient time before electricity and the intensity of technology and rapid change created a whirlwind in our minds...

I hope my giclee prints have a tiny bit of that stillness and peace in them.... Welcome to my shop.

presented with love and compassion,
Laura

Sizing details

I don't paint in standard frame sizes, so the print sizes are also not in standard sizes, but approximately the measurements that each listing is for. This is true for all except the $17 cropped versions of my art that are listed at 5" x 7", and a few of the prints that are available only in one small size, because their originals were very small paintings.
