Announcement   -Shop updates will typically be on Fridays. I will do my best to make announcements with the specific details each week
-------------
In order to better suit my needs with the recent progression of my congenital disability, I am changing from my original made-to-order shop structure, and will mostly have ready-to-ship items available from now on.
****Unfortunately my curtains are not available anymore, and I am not taking custom orders at this time. ****
----------
Please review my policy page https://www.etsy.com/shop/LeightonPointLinen/policy for more info about:
• Recommended care instructions
• Payment, Shipping, Refunds, and Exchanges
• Why flax linen is eco-friendly
• Some of the great characteristics and benefits of linen
-----------------

Hello everyone! Returning customers will notice that there are fewer listings in my shop than there used to be. The advancement of a congenital condition in Jan. 2015 has caused a permanent disability to my dominant arm, which can be very unpredictable day to day. Unfortunately this has forced me to make significant cutbacks to my business in order to accommodate the drastic change to my life and capabilities. Please bear with me.
You may occasionally find some made-to-order items, however I am now switching toward a ready-to-ship product structure so I can work at my own pace and adjust to my new limitations.
----------
Shopping local? If you are in (or near) Pembroke, Maine and would prefer to arrange for pick-up of your order rather than pay for shipping, I am happy to accommodate! Use the code 'LOCALFOLKS' at checkout to waive shipping charges on your order and I will be in touch via convo to arrange the details!

Updates

15 new listings active in my shop. Various large and small ready-to-ship everyday napkins, check 'em out!
I'll be listing these everyday napkin packs in the shop later this evening (8pm-ish, east coast)
I decided to start adding a hanging hook to my 4 way apron as well, sewn into the waistband. I have two available ready-to-ship in my shop right now, one in ginger, and one olive. Snatch them up while you can!

About

Leighton Point Linen

Sewing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mom sews and she taught me at quite a young age. Eventually, recognizing that this was not a fleeting interest for me, she got me my own machine (which I still use!) As I got older, and became more skilled, I started sewing some of my own clothes and bags, and I have kept at it ever since.

My interest in sewing and design competed with my love for art and studio work when I was planning for college, and I had a hard time deciding which route to take. I actually began my first semester in a fashion design program. However, the art world drew me back in and I had transferred into studio art by second semester, which saw me through the four years to graduation.

Fast forward several years, and my fella and I have moved an over ten hour drive from my hometown (in the rural northern Adirondacks) to the beautiful, and even more remote, rocky coast of far eastern Maine. We are creating a wonderful life in an 1890's farmhouse by the ocean; tending to chickens, gardens, and old tractors; wrangling two dogs, a few jobs, and more work around the house than we have time for!

For several years I was working on my own jewelry business, as well as taking on commissioned graphite portraits, and creating my own personal artwork. Whenever I needed a change of pace in the studio, I would switch my focus and spend some time at the sewing machine.

Eventually I noticed that I was spending more and more time sewing, and I developed an idea. It happened rather organically, starting from a small seed of a notion that I couldn't shake, combined with a growing love for all things linen, and has developed into the start of a new venture for me here on Leighton Point Road.

I'm a transplant from the rural northern Adirondack mountains to the rocky coast of far Downeast Maine. Though I am a mountain girl at heart, I'm continuously inspired by the beauty surrounding coastal living. I can't imagine a better trade-off.

Additional policies and FAQs
I appreciate all interest in my products, but I cannot take on wholesale orders at this time.
Thank you!

My products are made with Oeko-Tex certified 100% flax linen; natural and eco-friendly.
I pre-wash all of my fabric in biodegradable and hypoallergenic, unscented laundry detergent.
My studio is smoke-free, but dog-friendly.

LINEN CARE INSTRUCTIONS:
• Hand or machine wash cold
• Hang dry or tumble low
- If machine drying, it is recommended (though not necessary) that you remove it from the machine while still slightly damp. If linen dries thoroughly, it becomes brittle and takes several hours to recover its natural moisture and full flexibility. (The natural moisture content of linen is between 6-8%. Linen dried beyond this point will have to re-absorb moisture from the air.)
• I recommend that you do not use fabric softener- especially if are using one of my products to store food, since it leaves a residue coating on the surface of the fabric. This will also greatly reduce the absorbancy of the fabric, for towels aprons and such, and generally shorten the life of your linen.
• Use the linen setting on your iron if you prefer a crisp and wrinkle-free look
• If you plan to bleach your linen, I recommend an oxygen-type bleach, rather than chlorine bleach, which can cause yellowing over time. Oxygen bleach (hydrogen peroxide based) is also more environmentally friendly and and gentler on the fabric. It will not degrade and/or cause holes in the fabric like chlorine can.

**Be cautious if you machine wash the drawstring bags and aprons in a drum with a center agitator, strings always run the chance of getting caught up in the agitator**

Why is flax so eco-friendly?
• It is a 100% renewable and abundant natural resource.
• It is 100% biodegradable without treatments.
• Flax crops require up to 5 times less use of fertilizers and pesticides when compared to cotton crops.
• It grows naturally and with less water than cotton.
• The whole flax plant can be used, resulting in no waste.
• Very little energy is required to process flax.
• Flax farming does not damage the earth beneath, nor is it hazardous to ecosystems.
• Less energy and chemicals are used in processing compared to that of artificial textile fiber.

**All fabrics from my supplier go through an extensive Oeko-Tex certification for all stages of production (this includes both the weaving and dyeing processes), ensuring that all fabrics and dyes are free of harmful toxins and irritants, are biodegradable and recyclable. They test for over 100 harmful substances and is internationally recognized. Also, it ensures that every step of production is environmentally friendly. The mills that make this fabric are environmentally friendly, producing no air, water or noise pollution.

Why do I love linen so much??

•It is highly absorbent.
Linen is hygroscopic. In other words, it rapidly absorbs and releases moisture. In fact, linen can absorb up to 20% of its own weight in water before it even feels wet-making it the perfect choice for your dish towels and napkins.

•It is hypoallergenic
Linen, because of its natural fibers and production process, is specially formulated to be hypoallergenic. In other words, using and wearing linen will help you to avoid common allergic reactions found with other fabrics, particularly synthetics.
Long recommended for people with sensitive skin, studies are now showing that linen may even actually help people overcome certain allergies.

•It is antibacterial
Linen is one of the “purest” fabrics available anywhere. Because of its incredibly strong tensile strength, linen resists not only stains and dirt, but also inhibits the growth of bacteria that are so common with fabrics that have neither the essential fiber qualities or fundamental weave of linen. Hospitals and service industries around the world use linen products to assure the utmost in sterile environments. In fact, linen thread is the only suture approved for internal use in the human body!

•It is extremely durable
With its high tensile strength, linen is up to three times as strong as both cotton and wool. No more worrying about everyday use-you’ll pull out your linens for every occasion.

•It is exceptionally long-lasting
Linen is one of the few fabrics that actually gets better with age. Softer. Smoother. More lustrous. More absorbent. Lasting up to 12 times as long as cotton, linens regularly pass from generation to generation and redefine the meaning of heirloom.

•It is moth resistant
No more moth balls? What a relief! Naturally resistant to the most common fabric-devouring bugs, including moths and carpet beetles-due to its long, strong parallel fiber structure-never worry about moths again.

•It is dirt and stain resistant
It’s in the fiber! Thanks to molecular structure of flax, linen is naturally resistant to dirt and stains.

•It has high air permeability
Linen breathes naturally. As compared to other natural fibers and synthetics like polyester, linen offers superior breath-ability and comfort.

The list goes on....
