Metal and Stone

My Story
I've been making jewelry since I was a young girl. What started with my mom's DMC floss and sisters' old seed beads has now turned into a passion for gemstones and metal. My eyes were opened the first time I went to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show (I used to live in Tucson) and also learned to crimp! As my skills improved I started my Etsy shop and began to sell at local shows. I felt my creativity was limited with only stringing beads to make necklaces and bracelets so I took an intro metalsmithing class at the local college. I fell in love with manipulating metal and bought some tools. Since then I continue to teach myself new techniques all the time (I love to learn). Today, I combine my love of beads, color, and texture with skills of manipulating metal sheets and wires to create eclectic but simple, one of a kind, everyday jewelry

My Inspiration
I have a strange love for rocks and landforms. My degrees are in environmental geology and geoscience education. I think Mother Nature creates the most beautiful colors, patterns, and textures. I love to incorporate natural gemstones in my jewelry. I am often inspired by colors in gemstone beads and patterns and shapes in cabochons. I want to showcase nature's beauty and compliment it with my metalwork. I think a circle is the most perfect shape, and am drawn to its cousins ovals and ellipses. Mother Nature seldom draws a straight line. I am drawn to asymmetry, but am limited by my own tendency for symmetrical designs.

The Process
I have a sketch book where I record and flesh-out my ideas. It has many pieces of paper tucked in the pages - you never know when and where inspiration strikes! Once I decide to make a piece of jewelry I head down to my basement studio and begin. I transfer my design shape to the metal and begin cutting, sawing, and piercing. Next is filing and sanding. Once I have shaped my metal I can solder the elements that need to be soldered. During this process I am continuously re-evaluating my original design - Does the size work? How will it wear? Do I need to change the shape or add texture? Then I finish, clean and patina the metal piece and set stones if needed.

The completion of the piece happens at my beading station. I refer to my original design but always remain open to evolving ideas. I choose beads and lay them out, and then get to work wirewraping, stringing, assembling chains and clasps, opening and closing jump rings...whatever is required. I usually show my finished piece of jewelry to my husband and kids and ask them, "What do you think?" I also will try on the piece to see if it wears properly and make any adjustments needed.

My Hope
I hope the wearer of my creations feels beautiful and confident in expressing her unique and individual style in this world of billions.

Additional policies and FAQs
My craftsmanship is guareenteed for 1 year with normal wear. If something needs to be restrung, I will do so at my expense. Unfortunately, I cannot guarentee the materials (beads, claps, chains, etc.) For example, I cannot fix a broken glass bead or a damaged chain, but if damage occurs to a piece I have created, please contact me if you would like it fixed...we can work something out (bead replacement, etc.).
I am also willing to make custom orders. Please contact me with your request!
