♥ Chalkboard Prints, Notecards & Paper Goods:
All of my prints, notecards and paper goods are hand lettered on a chalkboard surface. I then take a photograph of the artwork to produce the products. Each design keeps its rustic charm since it is not digitally produced. This method truly provides a realistic chalkboard appearance - minus the dust! Please note: the frames pictured in the listings are for showing styling possibilities. The frame is not included.♥

About

Hand-Drawn Lovelies by Valerie McKeehan

In the world of smart phones and technology there is something nostalgic and comforting about the rustic charm that chalkboards and hand drawn art bring to a space. Lily & Val was born out of a desire to recreate this vintage chic style - minus the dust.

My first piece of chalkboard art was created for my own home. Shortly after my husband and I got married, I drew a "McKeehan's Coffee Shop" themed piece to hang in our kitchen. I immensely enjoyed creating it and after hearing such a great response from friends and family, I opened my quirky Etsy shop in June 2012. My chalk art hobby quickly turned into a full time job and shortly thereafter my husband joined Lily & Val full time as well. I feel so incredibly blessed that I get to create art for a living.

I love working with chalk because it gives such character to the lettering and illustrations. The “dustiness” and texture makes the artwork feel rustic yet chic at the same time. The fact that beautiful and expressive artwork can come from something as mundane as a piece of chalk is remarkable to me. Each design is truly unique and filled with its own special nuances.

My inspiration comes from many different places. The vibe of a restaurant, artwork on the wall of a coffee shop, a floral pattern on a vintage dress - these things have all inspired me at one point. I am also particularly inspired by vintage signs and lettering. I strive to create a cozy, nostalgic vibe in my pieces so I am naturally drawn to elements that conjure these feelings – coffee, tea, cooking, sweet sentiments, etc. To me, the simple things are what matter most and I translate that philosophy into my artwork.

My humble studio is located at my home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My husband made my work desk for me from scratch and I am incredibly proud of it. The surface is appropriately covered in chalkboard paint and always covered in chalk dust.

The Fall of 2015 marks the launch of my brand new book, "The Complete Book of Chalk Lettering: Create & Develop Your Own Style." It is now available wherever books are sold!

Thank you for looking around!

XO,
Val

Frequently Asked Questions:

Custom Chalk Art Requests

♥ If I send you my favorite quote, lyric, etc. can you draw it for me?
I’m sorry, but due to the demands of licensing, designing and growing the Lily & Val product line I am unable to accept any custom requests. I certainly wish there were more hours in a day!

♥ Can you draw my logo, blog masthead?
Unfortunately, I am currently not accepting this type of work. There are many other artists that specialize in hand lettered branding and logo development that would be better suited to fill these needs.

♥ Are your items customizable? Can I change the colors, add a name, or take out a certain word?
I wish I could accommodate your personalization requests, however, Lily & Val products are only available as pictured. I do hope you still find a design that resonates with you!

♥ Can you draw on a chalkboard that I supply?
At this time I am not providing chalk originals or hand painted chalkboards. I made a decision to focus my business on growing my product line and licensing. Very sorry!

♥ Can you create a wedding seating chart or custom wedding chalkboard signs?
Unfortunately, I no longer create custom, hand painted chalkboards. I’m very excited to say, however, that I now have a line of real, usable chalkboard signs for weddings that are available here: http://shop.lilyandval.com/collections/chalkboard-signs

Product Questions

♥ Do you offer framing? What are your framing/displaying tips?
The frames pictured in the listings are for example only and are not included with the print. I do not offer a framing option at this time. I do, however, recommend a light or white colored frame. This makes the chalk art really pop. ☺

Lily & Val prints will bring the rustic charm of chalkboard art to your space - minus the dust! To provide the most realistic chalkboard appearance, prints can be framed without the glass. Simply place the glass BEHIND the print. This option is only recommended if the print is displayed in an undisturbed area free of moisture.

If you are framing the print in an un-matted frame, the edges may need to be slightly trimmed.

♥ How is the chalk sealed? Is it going to smudge in transit?
The best part about Lily & Val products is that they provide the realistic look of chalk art without the dust!! They will not smudge because you are not receiving real chalk. All of my products are printed to create an authentic look without the fear of smudging or ruining. Watch this short video to learn more about my process: http://vimeo.com/77309273

♥ I really like this design, but I want to print it myself. Could you sell me the digital download?
The only designs available as digital downloads will be listed under the “digital downloads” section in the shop. I’m sorry, but other images are not available digitally. If you are looking for some fun digital downloads I recommend WorldLabel.com. I have designed a few sets for them and they are FREE!
http://blog.worldlabel.com/

♥ How are your products manufactured?
I work closely with extremely talented printers and manufacturers that make my designs come to life on prints, cards, placemats, stickers, chalkboards, etc. Everything is proudly made in the USA. I have a big heart for supporting small businesses like my own.

Other Questions

♥ What type of chalk do you use?
I use Crayola Anti-Dust Chalk. It has a nice weight and beautiful vibrancy.

♥ What type of chalkboards do you use?
I have a large, commercial grade, classroom chalkboard in my studio that I use for more intricate designs. I also use smaller boards (sized around 16×20) that are hand-made out of panel board (available at Home Depot or Lowes) and Rustoleum Chalkboard Spray paint. This provides a nice, smooth chalkboard writing surface.

♥ Do you use chalk markers?
Nope. Everything pictured in my shop has been drawn with the real, dusty thing. The dustiness is what adds so much character to the pieces.

♥ Any advice for someone that wants to get started in chalk lettering?
Practice, practice, practice! One of the best things about working with chalk is that it erases! This is so nice for practicing letterforms and illustrations. Do not be afraid to make mistakes, erase, and try again! I do not have any formal drawing or illustrating training. Everything I’ve created is a result of a lot of hard work and many, many hours spent drawing.

Also, sharpen your chalk! Yes, you can do this. ☺ I use a large pencil sharpener, but an eyeliner sharpener works well, too. The larger opening is perfect for the size of a piece of chalk. Sharpening your chalk allows you to create designs with much more precision and detail.

♥ Are your designs available for licensing?
Yes! I am represented by Jewel Branding & Licensing. Please direct licensing inquiries to Ilana Wilensky at ilana [!at] jewelbranding.com For licensing inquiries in Europe please contact Adam Meiklejohn of MGL Licensing at am [!at] mgl-uk.com. Thank you for considering my artwork!
