Hace unos diez años, me encontré haciéndome una pregunta sencilla pero poderosa: ¿Qué es lo que realmente me apasiona?

Pasé años en la Guardia Nacional del Ejército mientras seguía disfrutando de mi profesión en el sector de la informática. Si bien me sentía orgulloso de esa etapa, me había retirado del Ejército. También solía disfrutar de una buena copa —la cerveza y el whisky formaban parte de mi tiempo libre—, pero también me he alejado de eso. Así que empecé a indagar más a fondo.

La gente suele decir que le encanta cocinar, pero ¿disfrutan picando y hirviendo los ingredientes? ¿O les produce la satisfacción de hacer felices a los demás? Quizás sea el orgullo de crear algo memorable. Esto me hizo pensar: ¿qué me gustaba hacer cuando era más joven, cuando tenía tiempo libre para disfrutarlo?
La respuesta era clara: me encantaba crear cosas. Maquetas, manualidades, cualquier cosa que pudiera construir con mis manos. Así que tomé algunas herramientas y volví a crear. Una de mis primeras piezas fue un pequeño joyero, hecho completamente a mano. Lo puse a la venta en Etsy, solo para ver qué pasaba.

Luego recibí un mensaje de la Sra. Ledbetter de Georgia. Me preguntó si podía hacer una versión más grande, con sus propias especificaciones. Me dediqué por completo a ese proyecto. Por aquel entonces no sabía mucho de envíos y terminé gastando más en el envío de lo que gané con la venta. Pero no me importó, porque había creado algo significativo para otra persona. ¿Y esa sensación? No tenía precio.

Ese momento encendió una chispa. Me di cuenta de que había conectado con algo real: una parte de mí que casi había olvidado. Siete años después, tengo un taller de carpintería completo y un espacio para impresión 3D. Y sigo sintiendo la misma emoción cada vez que alguien me pregunta: "¿Me puedes hacer esto?".

About ten years ago, I found myself asking a simple but powerful question: What do I truly love doing?

I’d spent years in the Army National Guard while still enjoying an IT profession. While I was proud of that chapter, I’d since retired for the Army. I used to enjoy a good drink, too — beer and whiskey were part of my downtime — but I’ve stepped away from that as well. So I started digging deeper.

People often say they love to cook, but is it the chopping and boiling they enjoy? Or is it the joy of making others happy? Maybe it’s the pride that comes from creating something memorable. That got me thinking: what did I love doing when I was younger, when time was mine to spend freely?
The answer was clear — I loved making things. Models, crafts, anything I could build with my hands. So I picked up some tools and started creating again. One of my first pieces was a small jewelry cabinet, made entirely with hand tools. I listed it on Etsy, just to see what would happen.

Then came a message from Mrs. Ledbetter in Georgia. She asked if I could make a larger version, with her own specifications. I poured myself into that project. I didn’t know much about shipping back then and ended up spending more to send it than I earned from the sale. But I didn’t mind — because I’d made something meaningful for someone else. And that feeling? That was priceless.

That moment lit a spark. I realized I’d tapped into something real — a part of myself I’d almost forgotten. Fast forward seven years, and I now have a full woodshop and a 3D printing space. And I still get that same thrill every time someone reaches out and says, “Hey, can you make this for me?”
