Thanks so much for the beautiful handmade notebook! It was custom made and everything about it is just perfect: the arrangement of the different leathers, the stitching and dying of the paper! It's just so beautiful. Very talented artist and communication was a breeze. It also came it a very nice package and included a handmade tag and a little personal note. All in all it felt more like receiving a gift from a close friend than a purchase from half around the world ;-)Thanks again Melanie!

About

My journey to the art of storytelling

My name is Melanie, and I'm the creator of Linde Designs. I'm based around Utrecht in The Netherlands. The name of my shop is part of my surname. Linde is the Dutch word for a Linden tree. And that's how I've started my story: climbing trees to see the world behind.

When I am not at art school finishing my last year to become a graphic designer, I am fortunate to work in an analog workplace / atelier (Grafisch Atelier Hilversum). Here I'm bookbinding, working on my photography projects or organizing an exhebition. Either that or I'm hunting down another old neglected camera for my collection. I've always been creative and I've had many hobbies form drawing to candle making. My three biggest passions are graphic design, bookbinding and analog photography. This is the place where I can combine them.

I'm a storyteller. I always want to know the story behind things, how they work, how they got to be how they are now. I like old things, especially books and camera's whom I collect. I love things that have a history, a story to tell. Old things inspire me to respect the traditional way of making things, preserving the methods as passed on from generation to generation. In the atelier I'm working most machines are antique. We are not a museum, everything is in working order. Same goes for my antique bookbinding equipment and camera's. A coworker told me that he liked how I adress objects and machines, like they have personalties. To me, in some way, they do. They all have a story, some form of a soul.

The last view years haven't been easy. However, I learned a lot in the course, I met some wonderful people and learned about their own life stories, and I'm proud of the selection I offer in my store. I put emphasis on quality and the story is always leading for the shape it comes in. Throughout the last view years studying graphic design I discovered my love for collaborating with other artists. You can find more of this in my graphic design portfolio.

My work is motivated by self-discovery. I'm completely self thought on bookbinding and photography. I've always wanted a bellows camera. Hunting for one made me discover a Voightländer Bessa from 1929. I wanted to buy only that camera, but the seller only wanted to sell this entire collection in one go. So I bought it, all of it. Curious as I was I took apart every camera that didn't work to figure out why and make them work again. And so my collection begun.

I love analog photography, because it makes you slow down and think about the picture. It's also a process with lots of unexpected surprises. I remember watching the images slowly reveal through the bath as the chemicals developed my first black and white photo and I was hooked. It’s been a progressive growth ever since.

Tactility is very important to me, I want to feel it, hold it. The tactile pleasure of holding a processed strip of film just can't be equalled in the digital world. I love shooting with films that have something special or expired film. The saturation of the colors is like candy, it changes the story.

My style has evolved over time to capture a sense of emotion. The warmth of summer or the cold, stormy wind in the fall is something prevalent in the constant change of seasons. I try to incorporate the feeling and part of the story to truly bring out a image's connectivity and mood. Same goes for my journals and books, they are all unique. They may be part of a series, but none of them is the same.

I've been making books before, but I started making leather journals in 2009. I've opened up my Etsy shop in September 2011, but due to illness it was closed most of the time till 2016. Now I've opened my shop again and I've decided to combine my passions and expand my products with analog photography prints and artist books.

I gift wrap almost all my items by hand before sending each on their journey, whether it be down the street or to the other side of the world. I keep a scratch map of the world, every time I sell an item to a new country I can scratch that one off. Please help me scratch off the entire world. It is an amazing feeling to be able to share handmade with others across the globe.

All items have started a story, their adventure, now it's time to create a new one with you.
