About

The Story of Little Dogwood

I have always "taken photos" and of course I think we all have. But at one point, while my husband and I were on an Alaskan cruise, I decided that the camera I was using at the time simply wasn't enough. I wasn't happy with the photo quality. The pictures were small, they were blurry. There were no adjustments I could have made to the camera, not that I knew at the time how to even make them if I wanted to. We agreed that it was time to invest in a DSLR for future trips. In 2012, I received my first DSLR for Christmas.

I then invested in Lightroom and Photoshop. I started researching information about composition, exposure, editing, aperture, shutter speed, and everything I could. I was a hobbyist, passionate about learning and experimenting and finding my way through my photography journey. Then, in 2015, I along with many others, breathtakingly snapped photos of the super blood moon lunar eclipse. I lived in Washington State at the time, and was able to capture the moon as it rose behind Mount Rainier. For fun, I decided to submit the photo to a contest that NASA was holding. Not too long after did I discover that my photo was one of six semi-finalists. Sure, I was a hobbyist, but I never expected for my photo to be one of six chosen out of thousands.

I gave a try at portrait photography, successfully shooting a wedding and senior shoot, but I felt out of place. I am a muddled mix of introvert and extrovert and for the most part, I'd like to sell my work without putting a bunch of flair and salesperson pitches to it. I don't want to have people pose for that "perfect shot". I don't want to direct, I don't want to sell you a bunch of fluff. I want to capture beauty that doesn't need a pose. I want to capture what makes our world beautiful and special, and not just nature, but how we contribute through architecture and history, and I'll never turn down an opportunity to catch candid and real photos of people. Most of all, I want my work to be displayed and genuinely enjoyed.

I'm Molly. I chose Little Dogwood as a reflection of who I am and where I come from. I love to take pictures. I love natural light. I love mountains, sunsets, and people caught in an unplanned moment. I love sharing my work with others.
