"Lo mejor es andar descalza", fue un consejo que me dieron cuando estaba esperando mi primer hijo. ¡Me pareció fantástico! No tendría que comprarme ni un solo par de zapatos durante al menos un año. Unas gotas más para el fondo universitario, ¿no?

¡EQUIVOCADO!

Un par de meses después, me llevaron aparte a la guardería de mi hijo y me informaron que no podían asistir sin zapatos. Me pareció un poco extraño. Pregunté para qué necesitaba zapatos un bebé de 10 semanas. Lo único que pudieron decirme fue: "Es una política".

Recorrí la ciudad frenéticamente en busca de zapatos de suela blanda. Después de parar en seis tiendas, sí, seis, encontré un par de zapatos de suela blanda en una pequeña boutique de moda con un precio MUY elevado. Respiré profundamente y desembolsé el fajo de billetes. Fue reconfortante saber que esta marca de zapatos en particular utiliza materiales que se prueban rigurosamente para detectar sustancias nocivas para la salud humana y que son socialmente responsables (sin talleres clandestinos). Me gustaron tanto que compré un segundo par y luego un tercer par.

Pensé que estos zapatos eran bastante elegantes. Eso fue hasta el día en que mi bebé decidió usarlos para algo más que un accesorio de moda. Era hora de gatear. Estaba emocionada por el nuevo hito alcanzado. Se tomaron fotos y videos, se enviaron correos electrónicos, fui la típica madre eufórica de un niño que recién comenzaba a moverse. Mientras jugaba feliz en el patio áspero con sus nuevos y elegantes zapatos, mi pequeña gateó. Tenía miedo de que esas lindas rodillitas se rasparan con las piedras ásperas. Sus rodillas estaban bien, sus zapatos no. Estaban arruinados. La pintura estaba raspada y descascarada. El diseño bordado estaba rayado. En unos pocos días, los lindos deditos de los pies asomaban por los agujeros de los zapatos.

Probé casi todos los zapatos de suela blanda del mercado. No sobrevivió ni un par. Fui testaruda, encontraría el zapato que resistiera la prueba de gatear. Nunca encontré esos zapatos. Mi hija aprendió a caminar y pensé que mi búsqueda había terminado. Podía dejar de preocuparme por sus zapatos. Me equivoqué otra vez. Todo ese caminar había pulido las suelas de los zapatos hasta convertirlas en un calzado liso y resbaladizo a punto de ocurrir. Los fantásticos zapatos antideslizantes eran como patines de hielo en nuestro piso de baldosas. Especialmente si había un poco de agua. Después de unas cuantas buenas caídas, decidimos que era hora de pasar a los "zapatos de verdad".

Nunca volví a pensar en esos zapatos hasta que estuve esperando otro bebé. Mientras la mayoría de las mamás están ocupadas preocupándose por un parto sin problemas, un bebé sano y de qué color pintar la habitación del bebé, yo estaba estancada pensando en zapatos. Entonces se me ocurrió una idea...

Mi propio y moderno zapato de lona fue la inspiración para crear un zapato de suela blanda con punteras que soportarían la prueba de los gateadores. Parecía bastante obvio que es necesario algún tipo de "protección contra rozaduras" para prolongar la vida útil de cualquier zapato, ¡especialmente el de los gateadores!

Así que empecé a investigar materiales que fueran suaves y flexibles, pero lo suficientemente duraderos como para soportar superficies exteriores ásperas. No estaba seguro de lo que buscaba. Nunca había fabricado un zapato de suela blanda antes, pero estaba decidido a encontrar algo que funcionara.

Después de comprar docenas de paquetes de agujas de coser, 11 revisiones de patrones y 40 pares de zapatos, supe que había encontrado la solución. Había encontrado el zapato que buscaba. Rowan, mi segundo hijo, iba a ser mi primer probador de productos. A la tierna edad de seis meses comenzó a usar un solo par de zapatos de forma continua. Independientemente del color o el estilo de la ropa, usó el mismo par de zapatos durante casi seis meses. ¡Lo lograron! Sobrevivieron 6 meses completos, 4 de los cuales fueron gateando, dentro y fuera de casa. Se notaba algo de desgaste, pero definitivamente estaban en condiciones lo suficientemente buenas como para ser usados de segunda mano.

Barefoot is best" was a piece of advice given to me when I was expecting my first child. I thought this was fantastic! I would not have to buy a single pair of shoes for at least one year. A few more drops in the bucket for that college fund, right?

WRONG!

A couple months later I was pulled aside at my child's daycare and was informed that they could not attend daycare without shoes. I thought this was a little odd. I asked what a 10 week old infant needed shoes for. All they could tell me was, "It's policy."

I frantically zoomed around town looking for some soft-soled shoes. After stopping at 6, yes SIX, stores I found a pair of soft-soled shoes at a trendy little boutique with a VERY steep price tag . Sucked in a deep breath and forked over the lump of cash. It was reassuring to know that this particular brand of shoes uses materials that are rigorously tested for substances that are harmful to human health, and are socially responsible (sweatshop-free). I liked them so well I bought a second and then a third pair.

I thought these shoes were pretty slick. That was until the day my babe decided to actually use them for something more than a fashion accessory. It was time to crawl. I was excited about the new milestone achieved. Photos and movies were taken, emails were sent, I was the typical elated mother to a newly mobile child. While happily playing on the rough patio in her brand new fancy shoes, my little one crawled. I was afraid of those cute little knees getting scraped up on the rough stones. Her knees were fine, her shoes were not. They were ruined. The paint was scraped and flaking. The embroidered design gouged. Within a few days cute little toes were poking through the holes in the shoes.

I tried just about every soft-soled shoe on the market. Not one pair survived. I was stubborn, I would find the shoe that would stand the test of crawlers. I never did find those shoes. My daughter learned to walk and I thought my search was over. I could quit worrying about her shoes. I was wrong again. All that walking has polished the shoe bottoms right into a smooth, slick accident waiting to happen. The great non-slip shoes were like ice skates on our tile floor. Especially if a little water was laying around. After a few good falls, we decided it was time to move onto "real shoes."

I never did think of those shoes again until I was expecting another baby. While most moms are busy worrying about a smooth delivery, a healthy baby, and what color to paint the nursery. I was stuck thinking about shoes. Then I had an idea...

My very own trendy little canvas shoe was the inspiration for creating a soft-soled shoe with toes that would withstand the test of crawlers. It seemed quite obvious that some sort of "scuff guard" is necessary to extend the life of any shoe, especially that of a crawler!

So I began to research materials that would be soft and flexible, yet durable enough to withstand rough outdoor surfaces. I wasn't sure what I was looking for. I'd never actually made a soft-soled shoe before, but I was determined to find something that would work.

After dozen packages of sewing needles, 11 pattern revisions, and 40 pairs of shoes later, I knew I had found the solution. I had found the shoe I was looking for. Rowan, my seocnd child, was to be my very first product tester. At the tender age of six months he began wearing a single pair of shoes continuously. Regardless of the color or style of clothing, he wore the same pair of shoes for nearly six months. They made it! They survived 6 full months, 4 months of it were crawling, indoors and out. They did show some wear, but were definitely in good-enough-for-hand-me-down condition.
