Create, design, sew, repeat!
Hay una especie de magia en mí cuando me siento con tela, un plato de alfileres, aguja e hilo. Siento una sensación de emoción y, a la vez, de admiración por la capacidad de crear algo con mis propias manos. Algo que tiene el potencial de ser útil y hermoso. Con cada puntada, siento una promesa al esculpir lo que espero sea un regalo preciado o una pieza que amaré y usaré (¡o llevaré!) para siempre.
Empecé a diseñar ropa femenina nada más terminar la universidad, a mediados de los 90. En aquel entonces, el estilo elegante en la moda era un look "cool" y desenfadado, con un glamour discreto, definido por un minimalismo impecable y moderno. Este enfoque clásico de la moda consistía en una paleta de colores neutros, con básicos elegantes y discretos, y los accesorios justos para completar el look.
Durante las muchas décadas que llevo cosiendo, mi filosofía de diseño no ha cambiado mucho. Considero que la mejor ropa y los mejores accesorios son los sencillos, confeccionados con telas bonitas y sin grandes alardes. Mi intención, entonces y ahora, era ofrecer una selección de piezas atemporales que siempre hicieran sentir a quien las usara bella, elegante y cómoda.
Actualmente, mi trabajo se centra en enseñar confección de prendas y diseño de moda. Sin darme cuenta, también abrí una tienda de telas, o al menos, suficientes rollos de tela para abastecerla. Como mi tienda física es pequeña y está dedicada a la enseñanza, esta tienda virtual es una extensión de la experiencia de Little Stitch Studio. There’s a sort of magical thing that happens for me when I sit down with some fabric, a dish of pins and a needle and thread. I get this sense of excitement, yet reverence for the ability to create something with my own hands. Something that has the potential to be both useful and beautiful. With each stitch, I feel a sense of promise as I sculpt what I hope will be a treasured gift or a piece that I will love and wear (or carry!) forever.
I began designing women’s clothing right out of college in the mid-90’s. At that time, the smart look in fashion was an “effortless cool” look of subdued glamour, defined by cool and immaculate minimalism. This classic approach to fashion consisted of a neutral color palette of sleek, understated basics with just enough accessories to pull the look together.
Over the many decades I have spent sewing, my philosophy on design has not changed much. I find that the best clothes and accessories are those that are simple, cut of beautiful fabric and without a lot of fuss. My intention then, as it is now, was to offer a selection of timeless pieces which would always make the wearer feel beautiful, stylish and comfortable.
These days, my work is focused on teaching garment construction and fashion design. Without realizing it, I also opened a fabric store- or at least enough bolts of fabric to supply one. Since my physical shop is small and dedicated to teaching, this virtual shop is an extension of the Little Stitch Studio experience.
