What on Earth is CPSC? Why is important?
CPSC stands for Consume Product Safety Commission. They require all clothing to be tested for lead and phthalates and meet certain flammability standards. Third party testing is required unless the materials you use have been deemed safe or you are a small batch manufacturer.
Well aren't you a small batch manufacturer?
I am! I registered with the government for a special number because I produce under a certain amount of units per year. While I do not have to pay for third party testing myself, I do make sure I source materials that meet the standards.
Tell me more about this testing.
Sure! I use mainly organic cotton which is an exempt material. Because the government has deemed the process of making organic cotton to be safe and lead free. When I use polyester or other synthetic material I make sure to only choose ones that have been extensively tested by the supplier. Most plain surface (smooth feeling) fabrics do not need to be tested for flammability while raised surface fabrics (think terry cloth or flannel) do.
How do I know if other children's sellers are compliant?
Just ask!
The other sure fire way to know is by the tags. CPSC requires specific permanent tags on children's garments so that they can be traced back to the manufacturer with ease.
They also require location of origin, business name, care instructions, tracking information (batch and date of manufacture) to be permanently attached to the garment.
