Living in Light...inspired by the unconventionally beautiful!

I so love being creative. Always have. Always will. It’s actually crazy mad but for most of my life I have found that I have let other things get in the way of being freely creative with the things I am passionate about. Even when I was a Secondary School Textiles teacher in London, teaching teenagers to be creative and excitingly nurturing the creative flow in others on a daily basis, I myself found it difficult to break away from the busyness of life and actually produce anything creative in my own life.

On the occasions I would motivate myself to be still and start creating something I’d find that I didn’t know where to start!! Creative block BIG TIME!! But then one day I decided enough was enough…that if I didn’t start creating something with my hands that reflected what was inside of me…then my life would be unfulfilled!! (Haha dramatic I know…but that’s exactly what it took for me to get off my sweet little behind and actually do something!). I determined that I would start anywhere…even if was something very small…just as long as I started …and so during a half term week off school in 2010 I began my journey towards Living in Light and produced my first four pairs of Bianca Harem Pants!!

I slowly started adding pieces to the first Living in Light collection…I had my first lil fashion shoot for the label…I designed my first website…got my marketing in order…and then I began to tell friends about the brand and very very slowly things began to come together. A friend who was a business owner then suggested Etsy to me and I couldn’t believe how easy it was to get set up. I loved the personal touch that Etsy bought into the mix! I actually think that’s what I love most about being here!

When it comes to designing, lots of different things inspire me! I LURVE different cultures and the styles…colours and fabrics that are used by African, Asian and South American cultures. I also love to include positive, life giving messages in many of my pieces so that my products are far more than fashion items. I really do desire to have products that cultivate an atmosphere of LOVE…LIGHT…and LIBERTY. Anything pure…lovely…inspiring…and often times unconventionally beautiful inspires me…and I love to create out of a place of rest and joy!! Since leaving my full time job as a teacher I have a far more relaxed lifestyle full of joy and fun...which gives me plenty of ammunition to design and sew!

I like to spend time in India where I often source some of my fabrics. All of my African Prints are sourced locally in East London. The amazing print used in the Flower Power Retro dress is actually curtain fabric that I fell in love with from Ikea!! I knew I wanted to see it in a garment and I love the joy and fun the print evokes whenever I see it!! I often get inspired by those around me when deciding what to make out of the fabric. The popular Bianca Harems are named after my beautiful friend Bianca who initially inspired the design behind the harems.

I’m based in East London in the UK, and have a small workshop where I make my collection and also offer sewing lessons and image consultations in this space. Sometimes my customers are able to visit the workshop and try things on in person. It’s always great to meet a customer face to face! I love to add a personal touch when I’m sending out my orders. I wrap all my orders up in lovely tissue paper and make a nice lil card. It’s also super nice to actually hear from a happy customer once they receive their item! That ALWAYS makes me smile!! I try and do my best to meet the needs of my customers – whether it’s customizing their item for them, reserving pieces or even creating a new piece to suit a special occasion!

My nine year old niece Cameron is a delight when it comes to Living in Light - she's one of the muses so you'll see her modelling the kidwear range but she's also amazing in the workshop helping me with admin, despatch and anything else that needs doing! I love how she has seen something grow out of passion and take on a life of it's own...Living in Light inspires her...and that excites me! x
