About

The Doll Lover's Gift.

My Great Grandma Maggie had magic in her hands.

A talented seamstress and craftswoman, she could bring any piece of fabric to life. She transformed cast off socks into sock monkeys (long before it was trendy to do so) that engaged in scenes of spirited play on her sofa. She repurposed Grandpa's suits into teddy bears with soulful button eyes. With her touch, strips of brightly colored polyester became stylishly homespun braid and rag rugs. She fashioned circles, squares, and triangles of cotton into dozens upon dozens of full-sized quilts. To be the recipient of one of her quilts was an honor--warm knowledge that you were valued and loved.

But Grandma's true magic was the work she did for her second "family." Her babies, as she called them, were an assortment of dolls of varying sizes, shapes, and ages; their bodies made of bisque, fabric, celluloid, or hard plastic. Grandma scavenged back rooms and thrift stores seeking them out--the lost, naked, and alone. With loving care, she washed and repaired them, combed their hair, and dressed them in finery complete with stockings, shoes, and jewelry. Each was accorded its own special place to stand or sit throughout every available space in the small cottage she called home.

It was Grandma's desire that her "babies" be kept together when she passed. It was a wish that couldn't be granted. So extensive was the doll collection, fitting it comfortably into any one home--while still retaining space for daily activities--was a challenge. The doll family was split into pieces. One of two here and there given to children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren. A young mother at the time, I worried over that outcome. Of Grandma's heart breaking in heaven.

As the years passed, and my own children began to grow up and move away, I realized how fragile and precious the gift of time truly is. Often those dear to our hearts are with us for only a relatively short amount of time. For fleeting years that often seem like mere moments when we look back on them, we are privileged to love and care for those that come into our lives. Restore and replenish them the best we know how. When they leave our care, we can only hope that the memory of our love will help carry them through whatever life may proffer.

I've always shared Grandma's love of dolls--I have one or two in almost every room in my home--but I've lacked the time and resources to pursue collecting them as she did. A decade ago, however, I was given the opportunity to create a set of four paper dolls for a publisher. I enjoyed giving them names, personalities, and unique sets of clothing. Since then, here and there between the articles, essays, and books I've written and or illustrated, I have often return to creating paper dolls to share with family and friends. Inspired by Grandma's passion and devotion, I can be found spending very late nights and very early mornings dreaming up dolls designed to give love and be loved.

In fifth grade, I decided I wanted to write and illustrate books. I had a lot to be afraid of back then, and I wanted to help other kids believe in themselves and know they deserved to smile and be happy. Those aspirations continue to this day.

When I was a kid I was told children should be seen and not heard. No running around and playing, laughing, or having fun. Oh yeah, smiling was off limits too. In fifth grade, I decided I wanted to grow up and write and illustrate books for kids so that no kid anywhere ever again had to believe they shouldn't smile and be happy; and so even if their life was hard, scary, or lonely, they could believe help and hope were on the way.
