Announcement    I have heard it said, “ if you have two loaves of bread, you should sell one, and buy a hyacinth to feed your soul.”
Somedays the world seems to be turning much too fast, and the stress of our busy, over full lives makes us yearn for something to lift us up, and give us a wee bit of a soulful vacation from the weight of the day to day cloak of responsibility we all must wear.
Sometimes we just crave a new whimsical indulgence, to add some playfulness, artistry, adventure, mystery, novelty, excitement, and loveliness, just knowing it is the key to release us from the tyranny of our overfull to do list, and the treadmill of the ordinary, everyday mundane, even if for only a brief, but deliciously reveled in interlude. Somedays we just wish a genie would pop out of a magical bottle and hand us the thing our heart craves, when we don’t know where to look or have time to search for it.

Lotus Rising handbags are designed to be both the quixotic, adventurous, playful “hyacinth” you crave to feed your spirit, while at the same time satiating the angel of practicality who sits chastising on your other shoulder.

Meticulously designed, and lovingly handstitched with pride in quality craftsmanship, and durability, our Lotus Rising Handbags are also a treasure chest of colorful, artistic, Bohemian adventure, uniqueness, loveliness, and femininity.

Lotus Rising is committed to envisioning and working toward a more peaceful and sustainable future for all sentient beings, moving first and foremost from an understanding of the responsibility we all bear, to walk the Loving Path toward the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible. We are passionately devoted to a mindfully aware, earth- conscious business model and product, rooted in our belief in the inherent interconnectedness of all sentient beings, and the truth that the way we walk through the world, has a direct impact on all others around us.

We recognize and bow to the Buddha nature, the Lotus Rising in each precious and worthy individual, and the importance of serving the Greater Sacred Whole, as we join together caring for and lifting one another, in support of the highest good for all, and the creation of a more peaceful, just , compassionate, and loving world.

Toward that end, we use only reclaimed, recycled, textiles, materials and supplies, sourced from various creative reuse and textile reclamation centers, and repurpose them into unique, earth conscious, altered couture handbags.

Each year the textile industry throws away thousands of tons of fabrics as textile waste, which then enter the waste stream, where they sit in landfills not decomposing for many years, all the while leaching dyes and chemicals into the earth. Similarly, due to the rise of fast fashion, clothing which is made to wear out quickly after only a few washes, and marketing strategies aimed at making us feel dissatisfied and constantly in need of ever new and different fashion trends, thousands of tons of clothes are thrown away yearly as well.

By using reclaimed supplies rather than newly manufactured items, we are able to do our part to extend the use and life of these items, keep them out of the waste stream, save on energy and water which would have been consumed to manufacture new, virgin fibers, lessen potential chemicals entering land, groundwater, and waterways, and cut down on the release of more greenhouse gases which contribute to our current runaway state of global warming.

Lotus Rising handbags then, are not only beautiful, artistic, and functional,(being fully lined and loaded with a plethora of organizing pockets) they are also ecofriendly, sustainable, and infused with a mindful awareness of our interconnectedness to the Sacred Whole.

We invite you to join us in walking out a commitment to environmental sustainability, and a daily mindful awareness of our Sacred Oneness. With these truths held aloft as the flame which lights our way forward, Lotus Rising makes some really great, earth conscious, altered couture, handbags. We hope you will enjoy your purchase, feel all the love which has gone into its creation, and we thank you that by your purchase, you are partnering in our vision and purpose of working faithfully toward the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

A portion of the proceeds of your purchase is being donated to support our interconnected, young brothers and sisters at the Baltimore Design School, (BDS). These funds will assist in the purchase of much needed art, design, fashion, and educational supplies. The students at BDS are some of the brightest, most creative, visionary, committed, solutionary design thinkers, who will become our future leaders, and change makers. They have created a caring family of support at BDS that pulls together to help one another overcome the daily challenges they face of inner city living and poverty, staying focused on the bright future ahead, that I know is theirs to claim. Ensuring they have all the supplies needed to support a topnotch education, will not only help them in overcoming challenges and reaching their life goals, but it will help all of us as well, for it is true that we become blessed, by blessing others. These precious, sacred, worthy, and beautiful kids are the next stewards of our world, and they are the ones who are learning now, how to design and create the peaceful, compassionate, socially and environmentally just world we all dream of. Thank you for joining us in believing in, and helping to uplift these beautiful kids.

Fashion Industry, clothing and textile waste Statistics:

Fashion Industry, clothing and textile waste Statistics:

Amount of clothing thrown away per year, which ends up in landfills:
•Second to oil, the clothing and textile industry is the largest polluter in the world.

The average consumer is now purchasing 60 percent more items of clothing compared to 2000, but each garment is kept half as long.

The average American will throw away 8.1 large trash bags, or 81 pounds of unwanted garments this year, which equals 26 billion pounds of textiles annually added to landfills.

• Landfills in New York alone, receive 1.4 billion pounds of discarded tops, bottoms, tablecloths, and towels per year, a situation that led the state to launch a massive recycling drive in 2016.

• On average, nationally, it costs cities $45 per ton to dispose of old clothing.

• Clothing can take up to 40 years to decompose. Synthetic clothing may take hundreds of years to decompose.

• Non-biodegradable clothes are manufactured synthetic textiles including polyester, spandex, nylon, and rayon[*]. It may take between 20 to 200 years to fully biodegrade these textiles.

• While some materials take longer to decompose than others, all have harmful effects for the environment. In addition to releasing gases like methane, most fabrics are made with dyes and chemicals that can contaminate the soil and water in the ground. 26 billion pounds of clothing and textiles go into landfills each year, yet 95 percent could be reused or recycled.

Carbon Dioxide:
• While it may seem harmless to throw out tattered clothes, these fabrics are likely to then end up in landfills, where they pile up to produce toxic greenhouse gasses that are emitted into the atmosphere. As a leading cause of global warming, these gases are very dangerous for our environment and hazardous for our health.

Estimates range from 330 million to 832 million tons of carbon dioxide annually for clothing production, enough to heat and power between 31.6 million and 79.7 million homes for a year. Discrepancies aside, it’s generally agreed that emissions from the fashion industry are massive and growing—one study predicts that apparel energy emissions will grow as much as 63 per cent by 2030.
• Per year, each US family’s clothing impact is equal to carbon emissions from driving an average modern car for 6,000 miles.
• Toxic chemicals:
Cotton farming uses between 2.4 and 2.6 per cent of global arable land, but is responsible for 24 per cent of insecticides and 11 per cent of pesticides.

• China’s textile industry processed 41.3 million tons of fiber and accounted for about 55 percent of the world’s total production.
• A single mill in China can use 200 tons of water for each ton of fabric it dyes. Many rivers in China run with the colors of the season, as the untreated toxic dyes wash off from mills.

• Dyed natural fibers can take hundreds of years to decompose, and once in the landfill can release methane and CO2 gas.

• Polyester, the most widely used manufactured fiber, is made from petroleum.

• In order to manufacture nylon, nitrous oxide is released as part of the process. Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas that is 310 times stronger than carbon dioxide.

• The manufacture of synthetic fabrics requires large amounts of crude oil, releasing toxic compounds, which can cause or aggravate respiratory disease.

• Waste created:
One study estimated between 40,000 square kilometres (just bigger than Switzerland) and 120,000 square kilometres (just bigger than Nicaragua) of textile scraps are left over from manufacturing each year.

• Water used:
It can take more than 700 gallons of water to produce a T-shirt, whether it is fast fashion or not.
• To grow enough cotton for a simple cotton t-shirt requires 713 gallons—and improper irrigation techniques have caused extensive damage, like the tragic shrinking of the Aral Sea.

Each households clothing impact takes approximately 1000 bathtubs full of water per year.
• The amount of water needed to make a t-shirt is enough for one person to stay hydrated for 900 days while the amount of water needed to make a pair of jeans is equivalent to hosing down your lawn for 9 hours straight.
• 20,000 liters of water are saved for every kilogram of cotton that is recycled instead of thrown away

Sweat shop labor:
• Treating clothing as a disposable commodity also has a human cost.
Much of the fast fashion that we buy, wear a few times, and then toss out is produced in sweatshops.
• In 2013 the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, killed more than 1,100 people and injured more than 2,500 others. It led major companies such as Walmart, Gap, and Sears to create the Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety, but enforcement of worker-safety regulations is unknown, and a sobering 60 percent of brands have no real idea what kind of circumstances their ready-for-mass-consumption items are manufactured under.
• Redress and other activists hope that if people are informed about what's going on, they'll start to demand more ethical fashion.
• Among the 40 million garment factory workers in the world, most make less than $3 a day.
• Outsourcing textile production to poorer countries means cheaper price tags for consumers but little in the way of upward mobility for those making the items.

• Recycling and Reuse impact:
If the average life of clothing was extended by just three months, it would reduce by five to ten percent, their carbon and water footprints, as well as waste generation. The recycling of two million tons of clothing per year equates to taking one million cars from U.S. streets.

If the average life of clothes could be extended by just nine more months, it could reduce carbon, water, and waste footprints by as much as 20 to 30%.

Lotus Rising Handbags and Finery is doing our part to change these statistics, by creating our products using only reclaimed and repurposed supplies and materials. In purchasing our products, you too are making a change for a more peaceful, sustainable world.
Thank you.

If you would like more information, please watch the excellent documentary, True Cost, about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?
Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world’s leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented project that invites us on an eye opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders

I am happy to discuss custom orders with you. There will be an additional design fee added to all custom orders. I create my handbags from reclaimed and repurposed textiles and materials, so it will not always be possible to make multiple copies of an item unless I have enough fabrics. I will also have to use the fabrics I have on hand, so you will need to afford me a bit of creative license, rather than choosing exact fabrics, and trims.

If you need a specific fabric which means I have to purchase it retail, there will be an additional cost for fabrics or supplies.

Sizing details

I do my best to list all size details in my shop listings. These are handcrafted items though, not factory stamped out, so there may be a wee bit of variation from the listing.

Care instructions

Lotus Rising handbags are handcrafted with meticulous attention to detail. Many of our handbags have elements of delicate hand stitched laces, buttons or beads. We do not recommend washing your handbag in a washing machine. If it should become soiled, use a slightly damp cloth to gently wipe it. If your handbag is highly embellished, we also do not recommend that you carry it in the rain.

How many handbags do you make that are exactly alike?

Lotus Rising bags are made from reclaimed/repurposed materials, and found treasures, sourced from a multitude of locations. This makes each of our custom designed handbags rare, novel, and uncommonly, one of a kind. Being handstitched, and not stamped out en masse, factory conveyor belt style, you may also, from time to time, notice slight imperfections, or pieces that may have slightly different color or interesting textural mixes. That is part of the fun of sewing and purchasing products made from reclaimed materials, that have a smattering of this, and a dab of that, a texture here, a splash of color and a bit of lace or fringe there, all artfully arranged, designed and meticulously handstitched to create a work of wearable art.

How can I do my part to stop the fast fashion, throw away clothing trends?

In this age of fast fashion, and products made with poor quality materials, meant to wear our quickly, your purchase has helped to put the brakes on, and return to custom designed, hand stitched, slow fashion, that is more environmentally and socially just and sustainable, and created with attention to quality and durability.
Your purchase has also helped to extend the life and use of reclaimed and recycled materials, which have been repurposed and designed to create a new, artistic, lovely, and fully functional fashion accessory.

Eco friendly products are important to me, are Lotus Rising Handbags earth friendly?

All our Lotus Rising Handbags are made with reclaimed, recycled and repurposed materials, to fit the conscious and enlightened life styles of our customers. Our bags allow you to rest assured that your purchase has not contributed to the wasteful use of hundreds of gallons of water, in order to create all new fabrics. It has not created dyes and chemicals to leech into land or waterways, it has not contributed to sweat shop labor, or added to the release of green house gases from the manufacturing process of creating all new products, and it has saved fabrics and supplies from taking up space in landfills where they may not decompose for many years.

Does any portion of my purchase benefit others?

Yes, the amazing kids at the Baltimore Designs School.
These amazingly gifted and talented kids have to deal daily with many hardships and challenges that face inner city Baltimore families, and yet, through hard work, perseverance, determination, and a great abundance of talent and enthusiasm (as well as the love, caring, and support of a great group of teachers and administrators) they are steadily climbing to the mountain top of success, as they sharpen and develop skills and knowledge that will allow them to become some of the best and brightest artists, designers, change makers, innovators, and leaders of their generation. I have no doubt they are going to rise up and change the world, bringing it ever closer to becoming, "the more

Why did you create this shop and handbag business?

I am disabled with systemic lupus , which has severely affected my heart, so I am unable to work outside my home any longer.
