Gold Filled v. Gold Plated:

Gold filled jewelry is an economical alternative to solid gold jewelry. The outer layer of gold filled pieces is a layer of gold pressure bonded onto another metal. Everything you can see and touch on gold filled jewelry is solid gold which has 100% more gold than gold plated jewelry. Gold filled jewelry is much more valuable than gold plated jewelry and is much more tarnish resistant as well. Gold filled jewelry will not flake off, change color, or rub off. Gold filled jewelry also faces government regulation and the quantity of gold must be at least 1/20th of the weight of the total piece. On the other hand, gold plated jewelry is not regulated by the government. Gold filled jewelry will last much longer than gold plated jewelry as the gold layer will not wear off over time. Lastly, gold filled jewelry can be cared for the same way you would care for solid gold jewelry. I clean mine with silver jewelry cleaner and then rise throughly under water and dry off with a soft towel. It can also be polished with a jewelry cloth.
