Art with pulse and presence.
Hello, my name is Alex, and I am the founder of Luminuna. I am an artist, ethnographer, and writer based in the United States. I have been weaving together novel worlds and fantastic narratives since my earliest days. I use my journals, sketches, photography, and digital tools to craft images that are both grounded and untethered, structured and wild.
I like to take all aspects of an image and use them in unconventional ways. I follow an idea and spend time with it, breathing life into it until it starts to breathe life into me. When the work is finished, I feel a new presence nearby with which I share a sense of joy. My imagery leans towards mixed media and aims to create new modes of expression, each one the first of its species.
Each world I create starts with a grain of sand. When I am done with it, I know the hours its inhabitants keep, their favorite ice cream flavor, and when the seasons change. These are all places I have been to. Or perhaps, they are places that, once I finally reach, will feel familiar.
I love exploring messages of belonging and shared space, as well as the nuanced bonds between people and place. In my work, you will find figures that capture the experience of kinship to both the known and the unknown; scenes that uncover the fragile threads of harmony. The monsters in my work are able companions along the journey, fellow travelers that might offer as well as benefit from assistance along the way.
It is humbling to have you stop here, in this minute corner of the internet, even for a brief respite. It is even more humbling to know that a piece of my imagination may find a home in yours.
P.S. There will be cats.
