Announcement   Welcome to my shop.... Thanks for stopping by!

Check out our new category of products: Felted Cuffs and Bangles. Very excited about these!!

Please take a moment to review my Policies section before emailing questions. If you can't find the answer to your question there, by all means, drop a line and I'll get right back to you.

We continue to offer fabrics left over from the studio of a well known Bay Area art to wear clothing designer. Many of the fabrics are custom-dyed or custom designed by the designer, making them totally unique -- you won't find these in the fabric store. She almost always pre-washes her silks, so they will be soft -- no sizing, no formaldehyde. Some of these fabrics were $60/yd or more; so the prices you see here are incredible deals!

NOTE: I realize it is hard to tell about a fabric from the pictures. I am more than willing to mail you a small swatch; convo me with your address and I'll send it along!

I offer handmade scarves, some made from scraps of fabric from the clothing designer; some hand knit by me from my incredible yarn stash. And now felting...my new passion!

For yet more offerings of fabric, check out my eBay store here: http://stores.shop.ebay.com/Karens-Consignments-nee-Yarnw-Soul__W0QQ_armrsZ1

Enjoy the eye candy!

About

Mostly One of a Kind Designs, Knit, Felted, Sewn

I started my Etsy shop back in 2008 at the suggestion of a regular customer. At the time I was helping an avant garde "art to wear" clothing designer friend of mine liquidate about 30 years accumulation of fabric. It took us about 3-4 years. I was doing all of my selling on eBay. The designer friend referred me to a couple of her friends, who happened to be knit designers and they were in the same situation. 30 years accumulation of yarn that they wanted to move. For a couple of years, I had yarn and fabric to the rafters while I did this.

At the same time, I had a vintage jewelry website of my own, www.pastgems.com, which is still in existence. I was super busy managing the website, photographing, listing and shipping yarn and fabric and the last thing in the world I thought I needed was another "store" to manage. So I resisted. Finally, as she kept insisting that I needed to be on Etsy, I succumbed and opened my Etsy shop, "LuxeFabricandYarn."

I am so glad that I did! It has been loads of fun and we were very successful in liquidating yards and yards of fabulous fabric and pounds and pounds of commercial quality yarn.

Of course, handling all of that wonderful fiber every day reawakened in me my long dormant creative side. I hadn't knitted since my high school days (lots of booties) and hadn't crocheted since my 30's. My first afghan took me forever to make and I was so proud of it. We were getting ready to move from Hawaii back to the mainland (Bay Area to be exact) and on one of our last nights out, we had a babysitter and the afghan disappeared. She denied any knowledge. So sad. (I know, an afghan in Hawaii seems counter-intuitive, but truly, there were occasional cool evenings when it was good to snuggle with.)

Around the same time I became very friendly with a gym buddy who also made scarves galore. I even bought one of her scarves for my daughter. And I was looking at it and saying "I want to do this!" I asked Patty to come over and give me a knitting refresher; took about 15 minutes to get the hang of it again...it's just like riding a bike...seriously!

Thus, Karen Giles Designs was born. I just renamed my shop this year, as it took me awhile to accept the new role of designer! The "yarn project" as I called it is long done. Last year, I bought the leftovers from a LYS that was going out of business and have been offering that at steep discounts; it's almost gone too. I love doing that, because I get a chance to play with the fibers! And what doesn't sell might somehow find it's way into my stash!

Besides knitting (I haven't refreshed the crochet skills yet) I also love "upcycling" fabrics that I snag from my designer friend. I may either buy a few yards of one of her amazing fabrics, OR my favorite: she gives me bags of scraps from the cutting room floor! This is stuff that used to go to the landfill! Horrors! Now I have a customer that takes most of the bags and I also paw through the snag special stuff of my own and then will fashion something unique and one of a kind from my finds.

I recently had an opportunity to sit at the feet of a master fiber artist, Melissa Arnold to learn her felting technique. So that is my latest passion, creating felted and nuno felted scarves and infinity scarves. So FUN!! I love how every piece has a surprise for me.

So that's kind of the long version. I could go on I'm sure -- what fiber addict doesn't love to just expound on her (or his) passion? But you're probably tired of reading this by now, so let me just end by welcoming you to my shop. I invite you to browse around, would be ever so grateful if you marked me as a Favorite Shop and would love it if you also visited by Facebook page and let's get to know each other there. I look forward to serving you.

I love fiber and I love creating. It's fantastic to create something new and interesting from rescued or upcycled fabrics...or even yarn. I've been known to unravel a sweater or two! My dream is to make this my full time business someday!

Welcome to Karen Giles Designs, aka Luxe Fabric & Yarn. My name is Karen. My goal is to provide exemplary customer service along with my offerings of exceptional, interesting and unusual designer fabrics and high quality yarns. I sell the fabric on behalf of a well known high end art-to-wear clothing designer in the Bay Area. Yarn offerings will be sporadic, depending on what buying opportunities I might happen upon.

I also design and create scarves out of upcycled lux fabrics, often hand painted; or high quality knitting yarn and you can expect to see some felted items from me in the near future as I am just learning that fantastic and magical art.

Payment
I prefer Paypal or Etsy's direct checkout as payment methods, as these are the easiest and most secure ways to complete a sale and allow me to get your item to you as quickly as possible. Since my Paypal account is a merchant account, you may use a credit card to make your purchases and do not even need a Paypal account. I have in the past accepted money orders and at times even personal checks, but due to some past difficulties, I would prefer to stick to credit card or other electronic payments. PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST MY BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION OR OFFER TO PAY VIA WESTERN UNION. THESE FORMS OF PAYMENT ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE. IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT, PLEASE CONTACT ME TO DISCUSS PAYMENT BEFORE MAKING YOUR PURCHASE.
Shipping
I use USPS Priority Mail or First Class Mail for all my shipping. I make every effort to ship within 1 business day of receipt of payment. There is a small markup on shipping to cover the cost of supplies. Additional items (such as yardage) are charged a nominal price; when all is said and done, if shipping has been overpaid, I will issue a reimbursement through whatever form of payment you used. Insurance is optional, but recommended for more expensive purchases. I cannot be responsible for undelivered items -- it is rare that packages become completely lost, but it DOES happen.

International customers: I am happy to ship anywhere in the world. Please understand that the USPS policy, is that once a package leaves our shores, it is out of their control. It has happened that a package is held up in customs for a period of time. There is no way we can control this or track it. It is also possible that your country may charge additional duty fees on incoming products. Again, this is something over which I have no control. Please make yourself aware of your country's regulations and policies.

Please, please do not ask me to send an item to you as a gift in order to avoid paying duty. I run my business with integrity and this is dishonest and I am not comfortable doing this.
Refunds and Exchanges
I want my customers to be happy! If you are unhappy in any way with your purchase from me, please drop me a line and let me know why and what I can do to make it right. In most cases, I will accept returns with a full refund, minus shipping fees. Unless it was totally my fault, in which case I will also refund the shipping fees.
Additional policies and FAQs
One of my favorite words is "Integrity." It is my intention to conduct my business with complete integrity. This means that I will honestly reveal any defects; if I don't, it just means I missed it -- it doesn't mean I was trying to pull a fast one on you. I conduct my business with honesty and fairness with a goal of creating happy customers who will return to my shop again and again and maybe even become friends! After all, what are friends, but strangers you haven't met yet?

Caveat: I don't always know the fabric content of the fabrics I offer. I've spoken to my designer about this; she doesn't always know either. When she does have the information, she provides it and of course, I include it in the listing. It turns out that exact content is not so important to her or her customers; she just goes by look and feel when she buys. I understand that when buying online one wants to know exactly what they are getting, so I do my best to provide all the information I can. And as mentioned before, I am happy to send swatches if you need to see and feel before buying.

A further request: All of my fabrics are designer fabrics, most are imported from Europe and these are unique fabrics that would not be available to the general public in your local fabric store. For the most part, these are very expensive fabrics, especially when you include the customs and international shipping that she pays to get them here. Our prices are already hugely discounted when you see them. Most of the time, she is taking a loss and I have a very narrow profit margin. We are not in a position to offer further discounts, even for quantity purchases, so please save us both the awkwardness and do not ask. The prices you see on the fabrics are our bottom line prices and you can trust that you will receive a quality fabric, unavailable anywhere else.
