About

"Wear something nice for a change...........choose cotton" MAV Design Concepts is all about sensible, practical, sustainable designs.

I migrated to USA in early 1980s. My career included Hotel & Restaurant management, commercial Interior Design and Architecture. I worked on projects like Raleigh Durham International Airport Terminal 2, Novo Nordisk Pharmaceutical company and NC Juvenile Justice Detention Centers, site designer for McDonalds to name a few.

Since childhood, I dreamed of being a fashion designer and own a boutique. From age seven, I learned sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery from my mother. In the 1990s, I started a home decorating business and fabricated elaborate window treatments and home accessories. As a fashion and textile designer, I am striving to bring back US manufacturing.

My mission is to bridge the gap between those who worked with knitting machines and manufactured custom knits decades ago and our youth today. A student pursuing her 'fashion and textile' major at North Carolina State University learned how to hand dye yarn and machine knit as part of her summer internship.

I enjoy machine knitting with my own Pima Cotton hand dyed yarn. It gives me the opportunity to be creative and have fun at the same time.

The cotton yarn is either ring spun or open ended spun and even combed cotton. There are four varieties consisting of

100% California Pima
50/50 Pima and organic brown cotton from Arizona
60/40 Pima and brown cotton
100% North carolina cotton

Spun yarn consists of:
Ne: 6/2 (english cotton count) which means that there are 3 hanks in a lb of yarn. Each hank is 840yds, so one lb will have 840yds X 3 = 2520 yds/lb. Sport weight.

Ne: 6/4 (english cotton count) which means that there are 1.5 hanks in a lb of yarn. OR 840yds X 1.5 = 1260yds/ lb. Worsted weight.

I hand-dye the yarn using Procion and RIT dyes with a variety of colors. The amount of dye used is 1/5th of the recommended amount so all colors are light, sporadic, and pastels. The amount of water used is minimal to avoid waste and keep the environment safe from contaminantion. The skeins are converted into balls for sale, and for machine knitting garments and home décor accessories.

Knitted garments include tops, mufflers and dresses in single or more yarns with various techniques. The products are sold directly through arts and craft markets. People prefer to buy tops with single yarn or one color rather than multicolored. Keeping the demand in mind, I am only creating single color garments in different styles and sizes. My apparel line now has 8 styles of tops.

Experience this ultrasoft Pima product, it is limited edition, so order one before it's gone, help bring back manufacturing and teach our children new skills.

Welcome to MAV Design Concepts. I am Manju, a textile and fashion designer. As a textile designer, I am developing my own brand of California Pima cotton yarn for machine knitting, hand knitting, weaving and crochet. I dye the yarn in various sporadic, shaded colors that give garments an interesting weathered look. As a fashion designer I use the hand dyed artisan yarn to machine knit apparel and accessories for women and children. I also use Caron, simply soft yarn to make head gear for men and children. Some of my items are sold on Etsy, 'Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge' in Greenville, NC and art, farmer's markets or craft markets around Raleigh, NC. Visit my facebook page to see photos albums of new knitted tops, mufflers, caps and beanies, 'll in 1 Scarfeanie', and PIma cotton artisan yarn.
