MTR Designs creates handmade ferrofluid sculptures that bring science and art together.
I’m Matt Robison. My background is in Electrical Engineering, but art has always been my passion. After being involved in a plane crash, I left the cubicle behind to build something meaningful. What started as curiosity about ferrofluid — the magnetic liquid originally developed by NASA as a prototype rocket fuel — grew into a full design studio in Alabama.
Every RIZE, SPIKE, and mini display is carefully handmade here in the U.S. using high-quality materials: aerospace-grade aluminum, lab-quality glass, and premium ferrofluid. Many pieces can be custom engraved, turning them into one-of-a-kind gifts for anniversaries, graduations, or anyone who loves science and kinetic art.

Frequently asked questions
Does it use batteries or plug into the wall?
Nope, the RIZE contains no moving parts. Only pure physics is used to create the amazing spinning, anti-gravity rising motion.
Are the chemicals dangerous?
No they are classified as non-toxic but you should definitely not ingest them. The container should never be opened, but in the event of a break it can be cleaned using soap and water.
Does it spin forever?
No, once placed on the base the ferrofluid will spin around and rise up for a couple of minutes before it slows down and stops. The motion can be re-started by lifting up and placing back on the base or using the handheld magnet to give it a boost.
Will the ferrofluid break down?
We have developed a proprietary suspension liquid that keeps the ferrofluid nice and spiky for years if kept around room temperature.
Will the strong magnets wipe my hard drive?
Nope. If your hard drive was made after the year 1999 then you are completely safe. The data density for new drives is so dense that even a very strong generalized magnetic field will not cause any damage to the drive. You should keep all metal objects at least an inch or two away though just for good measure.
