An Unexpected Crafter

The seeds to my little shop were planted long ago when my mother taught me to crochet. Over the years, I made a the occasional gift for a friend, but a tomboyish outlook, a passion for outdoor adventures, and a busy lifestyle working in a rather non-traditional role left little time for crafty business.
For 20 years I trained in, and taught a Japanese Martial Art called Jujutsu. When I get into something, I Really get into it, and so for many years, my life revolved around martial arts and learning about Japanese culture & history.

Being diagnosed with a degenerative spinal condition was, to say the least, devastating.
I had to come to terms with the necessity for change. In all aspects of my life I was forced to slow down and find a new balance. It was then that a random result in a Google search gave me a much needed new outlet.

While researching Japanese crafts I saw my first “Amigurumi”, a few more taps on the keyboard, and I was looking at hundreds of cute crafted critters and they were Crochet! On first seeing these creations I was hooked (pun intended), these were not the odd, slightly scary dolls and teddies that my mother’s generation made, these were Seriously Cute! Looking at some of the simpler forms I thought to myself “I can do that” and so I dug out my hooks, bought some yarn and thus began my unexpected journey into crafting. Here was a new obsession (yes I’m still obsessive, haven’t learned my lesson yet) and it was one I could pursue when unable to get out and enjoy more active adventures.

From there it has been a surprisingly fun journey, from stalking through the internet in search of free patterns, I progressed to designing and creating my own characters and find it very rewarding seeing a new creation taking shape. I am always looking for new inspirations and for ways to improve my designs and techniques. My Etsy shop was born when my husband joked that if I couldn’t sell my creations I was going to turn into a yarn version of the Crazy Cat Lady with crocheted critters taking over the house :)

While I have gained a love for exploring new crafts and new ways to do things, I still find myself coming back to Amigurumi again and again. I have found the art of Amigurumi has a universal appeal for both young and old with many people around the world collecting them and appreciating their quirky cuteness all for themselves.

I still get out and enjoy the great outdoors, but I’m learning to work within my limitations and I have found that being indoors isn’t so dreadful after all. :)
