About

Melissa Washburn Art + Illustration

Welcome! I have been involved in the arts professionally for two decades, both as an an artist/designer and in the marketing and administration side of things. I originally went to college for fine art, but then found myself working in museum administration and marketing. After 15 years in the graphic design field, all the while continuing with my fine art, I discovered illustration as the perfect way to combine those two disciplines.

My influences range from children's book illustration to 18th century natural history illustration, and I am always learning something new. The natural world in all its weirdness and wonder provides endless inspiration for my work, most of which is created in a combination of traditional and digital media. I use watercolor, pencil, ink, acrylic, and gouache to create original works of art, and more and more combine hand-painted elements digitally. In my shop you'll find framed art, prints, stationery and cards, and now some towels, mugs, and other housewares with my art.

I was raised in Upstate New York, in the foothills of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. In 1996 I relocated to the Midwest, and now live about an hour outside Chicago, which has become pretty much my favorite US city. Except for winter. I hate winter.
