About

Mabooshka

How was Mabooshka created?

To say to was all my own idea would be untrue. I only discovered knitting in April 2013 due to my mother in law finding an old project she’d “stored away for a rainy day.” After seeing the beginning of the blanket I was hooked. I bought some yarn & needles, sat down and let my fingers do the rest. From the moment I got going, I knew I was a knitter. It wasn’t as easy as I anticipated it being, I was starting to understand why my mother in law’s project was abandoned. But after several million attempts I did it, I finally had my very first row of the basic knit stitch. I was so proud. I’d done it. I have no idea how many tears were shed just to get that very first row. But from then on I was a pro, learning new stitches, buying bigger needles and different yarns. Even learning how to make a knitting charts and patterns. As my pile of created goods started to take over my partner looked through them, and said people would happily buy them. So once I was happy with a selection of knitted & crocheted bits my mother in law and I took them to a little shop in Kent, the lady loved everything, she took all that I brought and asked for more. I couldn’t believe it, my very own creations in a shop. I then decided to buy a server and create my very own website where people can directly get things through me, and that’s how we are here today.

Why Mabooshka?

Many people ask me this when I tell them I have a knitting & handmade goods business, “Mabooshka doesn’t sound anything knitted or crocheted.” Funnily enough the name actually came from my partner, he used to call me “boosh” because of my wild curly hair, and when we first met he was convinced I was Eastern European. (Maybe in our family line we are..) It just kind of stuck after a while, I like that it has a puzzling ring to it making you want to know more.. I enjoy watching people when they say Mabooshka; their face puzzled, thinking it is said with a heavy accent, trying to say it right and not offend me.

What can you find on Mabooshka?

In Mabooshka you’ll find yourself buried in all things handcrafted. But what I specialise in is knitted and crocheted goods. You’ll also find both written and video tutorials (Vault of Stitches) so why not go to your local knitting shop or use an online shop to buy the essentials, sit back and watch a tutorial and make yourself a lovely beanie hat.
