When I approached AJ for this custom Ike jacket, I was reading a biography on Dwight Eisenhower and felt the curiosity to design my own Ike jacket. Recently, I received the jacket from AJ. Honestly, I feel like leaving 5 stars does not even do the jacket or AJ's craftsmanship justice! It's just such a beautiful jacket and so well constructed with care! The wool fabric is so sturdy yet comfortable and the entire jacket is warm yet light. Easily my new favorite jacket for spring and autumn! Although the process from design to finish took over a season, I think every second is worth the wait because of AJ's patience and friendly service. Not only does AJ listen to the customer's needs but he always answers with excellent advice and suggestions that helped me throughout the process. I highly recommend AJ's shop! Thank you!

I cancelled the order and let him keep the deposit. He didn't "get it". The final straw was when he pretty much let me know I was being "difficult" so I backed off and waited two weeks - no communication. When I contacted him, it was obvious my project had been left untouched the whole time. When it be clear I was going to have to spoonfeed him the whole project, I gave up. It was my first etsy purchase and I have been left older and wiser.

I sent Kevin 7 initial options for a velvet collar trim. When he didn't like my the colors, I sent him links to 100s of more options and offered to mail him swatches. Unfortunately, he resented that he would need to "spoonfeed" us all of the details and that we just didn't "get it". If a client doesn't like the fabrics we send, we will keep sending links and mailing physical swatches until he finds what he wants. We are used to "difficult" clients and projects - that is just what we do :) But if a client both doesn't like my suggestions - dislikes having to choose a fabric himself from a very large selection - and additionally doesn't want a refund, but just wants to teach me a "lesson", there is nothing left to do. Ordering custom clothing and choosing your own fabrics can be a lot of work!

About

Bespoke Tailoring in Denver

In 2009, Lianna was designing for Liz Claiborne in NYC, and AJ had just finished up a Masters degree from Harvard.

They had met years before at the Pratt Institute (where Lianna studied fashion design and learned traditional couture techniques).

Each was looking to create a business that was more hands-on and traditional---with a more direct connection both to the clients and to the materials.

With the "supply chain management" of the 1990s and outsourcing to Asia, garments had become so much less durable. The fabrics had become thinner and thinner. And the obsession with making garments cheaper and cheaper meant that the wages for the garment industry were very low.

They wanted to make garments from better and heavier natural fiber fabrics. To make garments that the clients helped to design---that were individual and connected to the clients.

And, ultimately, to build a studio (in the USA!) that included the most skilled independent tailors and dressmakers and could pay enough to nurture the craftsmen so that they could pursue their businesses full-time.

(See the bios of all of the artisans that work with us and links to their own Etsy shops).

Vigilante Laboratories here on Etsy became the first outlet for their new work and new couture concept. This was followed by the MacheteNSons menswear shop here on Etsy.

For the first few years, Lianna and AJ literally did everything---from patternmaking, to sales, to cutting, sewing, fabric sourcing, photography, shipping, sewing machine repair, and modeling.

When visiting AJ's hometown of Denver, Colorado right at the time of the stock market crash, they purchased a Victorian cottage in an industrial area right near downtown to use as a workspace for the tailoring and dressmaking shop.

Now the studio has become an amazing hub filled with the most exciting designs and gorgeous projects. AJ and Lianna are still involved in the designing and making of every piece. And every piece is handmade from start to finish here in Denver.

After moving to Denver from NYC, they launched the blogs www.DenverDressmakers.com and www.DenverBespoke.com to market to local customers and to showcase their work.
