About

Mad Meadow Jewelry Designs by metalsmith, teacher, and bench jeweler Kate Maddison Meadow

Mad Meadow is bold, crazy fun, colorful, high quality, artisan jewelry. Everything in the shop is handmade by Kate Maddison Meadow aka ME! I have a Bachelors Degree in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Making from Maine College of Art. By day I work as a goldsmith and bench jeweler for an independent designer in Portland, ME as well as teach metalsmithing classes.

I've been drawing ever since I was big enough to hold a crayon, sewing since the age of seven, and have always spent my days (and often nights) making. I come from a long line of fiber, textile artists, and artists in general. I've had dreams of fashion design ever since I can remember. When I was growing up I kept my own hand drawn look book of designs for my imaginary fashion line called "Kool Kate's". When it came time for me to go to college, art school was an obvious choice. Unfortunately, the school I chose did not currently have a fashion program, but I soon fell in love with the Metalsmithing and Jewelry program as it proved to have as close a relationship with the body. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it allowed me to learn a whole new skill set and gain experience with an extensive range of materials.

Everything in the shop is handmade by me. The resin is all hand cast using a jewelry grade, low odor resin that is pigmented by hand with powder pigments. Most metalwork is fabricated in house (with the exception of the occasional prefab ear wire or lobster clasp, etc.) and any crochet pieces are all hooked by my hands. I strive to be as green as possible. I get my silver from sources that used recycled and re-purposed metal. I have an obsession with collecting vintage buttons and cabs that I love to use in my jewelry. I am very much in love with the idea of giving a material that has been lying around unused for decades a life in a beautiful, wearable, work of art.

Custom orders are welcomed upon request.
