"Hey kid..."

I walked to school on a rainy day, carrying an umbrella. Not the little collapsible kind, maybe those didn’t exist yet. This was a big, wood-handled thing with a collapsible girth but an intractable length. (I imagine Mary Poppins carried one like this, I never saw the movie.) It wasn’t only rainy, it was also windy, also cold; I wore a black JCPenney blazer leftover from the funeral of an unknown relative and was poorly dressed for either. The suit jacket had become my winter coat, and this in a time before blazers were popular among public school first-graders.

Three quarters into the mile-long walk a big wind roared down my wet street, I held tight as the gust nearly ripped the oversized umbrella from my hand. The second wind was bigger than the first, it punched the umbrella’s underside and lifted me upward and forward; I was, for the first time in my life, flying.

This should have been a thrilling event—maybe it was, I don’t remember. But it wasn’t excitement that lingered, it was fear. Fear is the wrong word, I could have backspaced to remove it entirely but that would be wrong too. Fear lingered, but not fear of wind or fear of flying, but fear—or awareness, I could’ve said—of instability.

Before this windy morning I was quietly confident that I was firmly fixed to the ground, to the world. Life wasn’t great but it was familiar and I had no expectations of change. Still, circumstance was determined to decamp me. Shortly after wind tried, my estranged father did; it was the beginning of a transient life.

I collect many things. I do this because they are aesthetically wonderful, and also because they are psychologically heavy. My illogical child—the one wearing a funeral blazer, sailing above the sidewalk—believes that if he weights himself he will be hard to lift. At this point, I would be quite a haul.

This shouldn’t suggest that I’ll hoard anything, there are no empty food containers or buckets of cat hair in my collection, I have a discerning way (VOGUE magazine said of me in an interview about my vintage couture collection: He has an eye, simple as that.)

If I could keep it all, I would. But the law of the streets stipulates: every junky must deal to support his habit. So, “Hey kid, wanna buy some porcelain?”

For all other items, please contact us within 3 days of delivery, and take to an airmail shipper within 7 days of original delivery or original delivery attempt (tracking and insurance recommended for your protection), please email us for return address. If we allow the return of an item after the 7 day window closes then a rental fee of 3% per day (beginning on the 8th day, ending when the return tracking number shows the return has been given to an airmail or other mutually agreed shipper) will be deducted from exchange or store credit. All shipping is paid by buyer, if we paid a portion of the original shipping then that amount will be deducted from credit (or refund where applicable). Any items lost or damaged in the return transit will be nonrefundable so please insure returns for full value for your protection. Customs fees are not collected by us and therefore not refundable by us. Layaway purchases (including items held for 10 days or more while awaiting payment) can be returned for store credit minus a 20% return fee. Credits are not applicable to existing layaway, and can not be used to purchase merchandise that we have on consignment, or Sale or otherwise discounted items; store credit can't be used to pay the shipping cost of an exchange, shipping will be billed separately. Items bought with store credit are non-returnable. Artwork priced over $10,000 can be exchanged only for items of similar value (items individually priced at no less than 1/10 of the returned item's purchase price), or of greater value. Some large or fragile items may require additional preparation time before shipment. Large artwork (the largest unpacked dimension measuring more than 24") will have a 15% return fee deducted from its return credit.
• LAYAWAY is available, generally with a 20% deposit and 20% per month (longer layaway terms may be available for items purchased from our website). Please contact us through Etsy or through our website if you are interested in setting up a layaway. Uncompleted layaways are nonrefundable.

• ITEMS PRICED OVER $3,000 are payable by check, money order, or bank wire transfer only (any electronic payment, including Direct Checkout or PayPal, sent for items in this price range will be refunded.) • IF YOU ARE PURCHASING FROM OUTSIDE THE US, some countries charge an import tax for some international purchases (this tax may be collected by the shipping company prior to delivery). If you are concerned that your government might tax you for your purchase then please inquire with your government's customs office prior to purchase.
• Shipping is generally by USPS Priority or Express Mail, and always includes tracking (and insurance where available, the maximum insurance will be included if full coverage is not available for the package, destination, or carrier), we may use other methods, carriers, or couriers when needed. We generally ship within 1-3 business days following a cleared payment unless special packaging or handling is required, or unless otherwise stated or agreed (some items—including those that require printing, framing, or matting—may have a longer turnaround), and transit time is generally 2-3 business days within the US, with exceptions and without guarantee; international transit times vary by location. Orders are not voided by postal error or delay. In the event of postal loss or damage, we will file or aid with filing claims. If the carrier finds the claim to be valid then buyer will be compensated by insurance. For items that exceed carriers' insurance limits (generally $5000 US domestic for USPS, $2000 for local Fedex courier, and $500 - $2500 outside the US by USPS) buyers may arrange their own shipping if they prefer their own insurer / carrier, local pickup may also be available for items exceeding these values, please contact us to arrange; if we are arranging shipping then buyers agree to be compensated for loss of damage only according to the insurance limits of our carriers. If a claim is denied or if the purchase amount exceeds the insurance limit then we may, as a courtesy at our discretion, offer a store credit at our flagship store for fifty percent of the difference; we don't supplement insurance when items are purchased at a discount on their original list price. If the tracking number shows the item was delivered then no compensation for loss will be available so please be certain that your delivery address is secure. Signature may by required by someone at the delivery address, if you have any delivery or signature requirements please let us know prior to purchase.

• Titles and tags in our listings may contain keywords that are commonly associated with the merchandise, though not necessarily a description of it. Please see the listing's "Description" section for the item's specifics.

• As with all purchases of vintage and antique items, condition is relative to age and no condition assessment implies unworn, unused, showroom-new condition. Computer color displays vary, actual color may differ from that displayed on your monitor, if you have a question about color we will describe the color as we see it though we can't guarantee that you will have the identical color interpretation. Measurements are approximate. Variable meaning terms like 'gold', 'pearl', 'silver' may be used to describe color or finish, and may not indicate all possible literal definitions, please email if you need clarification. Keyword tags at bottoms of listings or ends of titles are for search engine use and may not precisely describe each individual item we have in that category, please refer to listing's description for that item's details. Our opinion regarding era, age, genre, style, material, medium, maker, technique, color, condition, origin, history, and all descriptive information may differ from yours and is offered without guarantee, we express no assurance that you or others will have the same opinion, or offer refunds if perceptions differ.

• Vintage and antique paintings may have had retouch, reline, resize, restretch, or minor repair in their history that may be unknown by/unrelayed by us; the backs of sealed artworks will likely not have been opened for inspection. Antique picture frames should be considered free with purchase of artwork, they will always show signs of distress, age, and wear including small losses of molded decoration; additional losses may occur in shipment and will not be covered by insurance nor a reason for return. Please notify us if you prefer to forego the frame and we will adjust the shipping price where possible. Artist names are relayed without guarantee. When necessary and possible, authenticity—including celebrity provenance—is confirmed to our standard, if you have your own criteria for determining authenticity of any item please employ it prior to purchase as transactions are not voided on the basis of discrepancy in perceptions of authenticity. After purchase, flat art may receive additional paper or fabric backing and/or improved hanging hardware at our discretion. All objects may be dusted, lightly cleaned and/or lightly polished before shipment. Please test capacity of walls as well as any hardware (hooks, wires, strings, etc.) that's been included with your purchase before hanging wall art, or consult a professional at your discretion.
