" ANY OBTSTACLE IS FOR THE BEST"
In Greece, there is a saying, "kathe embodio gia kalo," which means that any obstacle is ultimately for the best. It suggests that what may initially appear as a setback is actually a gift, meant to guide us towards a better direction. Our own journey from the bustling, noisy city of Athens to the serene haven of Agistri island perfectly embodies the wisdom of this saying.
Allow us to introduce ourselves—Thodoris and Deepika, partners in life for the past 23 years. Eighteen years ago, tired of our monotonous jobs and the urban lifestyle, an unexpected business proposition came our way. "There's a super cool beach bar for rent in Agistri. How about we take it together?" suggested some acquaintances we barely knew. Eager to leave Athens, we didn't think twice and accepted the offer. Within weeks, we left everything behind and made the move to Agistri.
However, our partnership soon turned into a colossal disaster. The beach bar closed, and we lost most of our savings, along with our hopes and sense of direction. Yet, we found ourselves marooned on this pine-covered gem, seemingly protected by a touch of magic. Here, there were no grand hotels, no bustling streets, and no traffic lights. Instead, we discovered two small villages where children played fearlessly in the streets, evoking memories of a simpler time. The friendly locals greeted us with warm smiles and a cheerful "kalimera" (good morning), even if they didn't know us. The breathtaking pine forest teemed with birds, rabbits, foxes, turtles, and peacocks. The harbor showcased quaint wooden fishing boats, accompanied by the graceful flight of seagulls. The view and sound of the crystal-clear turquoise sea, coupled with the scent of the salty breeze, enveloped us in an immense beauty and tranquility, working like a miraculous healing spell.
Our solace came in the form of long, quiet walks along the beach. Eventually, like curious children, we started collecting the gifts bestowed upon us by the tides—sea glass, seashells, driftwood, urchins, pebbles, and more. The more we gathered, the deeper our longing grew. It became a meditative treasure hunt that seemed purposeless yet brought immense joy and peace to our hearts.
Then, one fateful day, Thodoris picked up a piece of driftwood, stared at it, and exclaimed, "This resembles a bird! If only I could add legs..." When we returned home, he disappeared into the basement where his tools were kept, spending hours crafting his first driftwood bird. Soon, a wave of creativity swept over him, infecting me as well. I felt compelled to create SOMETHING of my own, leading me to paint intricate designs on smooth beach pebbles.
He made a wind chime; I crafted a picture frame. He fashioned a driftwood sailing boat; I designed a candle holder. Ideas began to dance joyfully within our minds, demanding to be brought to life. Creativity, much like a cicada, had lain dormant within us for years, hidden deep in the roots of our existence. But when the time was right, the song of our souls emerged, loud and clear.
For us, the cicada's song was an awakening, a turning point on our unknown path. Suddenly, it felt as if all the scattered pieces of a jigsaw puzzle were fitting together, and our destination became clear. Family and friends started purchasing more and more of our crafts, encouraging us to open our own shop on the island.
And so, we did just that. We opened a small shop, which turned out to be the most captivating and heartwarming endeavor of our lives. Now, after nine wonderful years, we feel compelled to expand our horizons a little further. That's why we have decided to open our shop, "MAGICICADAS," on Etsy. Through this platform, we hope to connect and communicate with other creative individuals, sharing our art and some of our favorite materials.
Our creations reflect the essence of this magical place, infused with the energy of the turquoise sea, the warmth of the sun, and the whispering breeze through the pine trees. Each piece tells a story—a story of resilience, transformation, and the beauty found in unexpected paths.
