About

In honor of the Three Kings

When I first decided to start up an etsy shop it was because I had a wide variety of hobbies that needed somewhere to go. As many other creative people - though really I don't consider myself that creative, just standing on the shoulders of other people's creativity - I had and still have the urge to create. I write, oil paint, water color, illuminate, make jewelry, naturally dye things, sew clothes, etc. and I couldn't NOT do it - or if I tried, I think I would go nuts in short order.

For me, and my inability to instantaneously spawn creative genius, names are achingly hard. My favorite stuffed animal as a kid was "Steggie" - and yes, he was a stegasaurus - follow ups included "Gamel" (a camel) and "Munkers." My husband and I joke that our children are lucky they weren't named according to the priority of their birth, perhaps in Latin to give a flair or originality (Unus? Duus? Yeah, I failed Latin pretty miserably...)

Luckily, my husband is great with off the cuff names, and humor too. I presented him with my problem and within five minutes Magi Gifts and Treasures finally had "being."

The name was perfect: religiously contextual, placed under the patronage of the three kings; it gives a shout out to yours truly (Maggie), and really embodies everything about my shop that I want my customers to know. I can't speak for everyone, but for me the three kings are evocative of ancient practices of love, reverence, and gratitude, of things old, cultured, and classic, of ways and things which have, on so many fronts, fallen out of usage or been forgotten by many.

Because I am a huge fan of the middle ages and the regency, I find that my product selection tends to reflect one or the other those, as well as my faith, Catholicism.

I am also a huge reader (where do I find the time? :) I read fast!). In a certain sense, I am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to literature - as in, I personally love the feel of a book in my hands, the texture of the pages, their color, the wonderful smell of a book. Aaaahh... I know Kindles and Nooks are convenient, but that's just a trade off I don't think I could make. I carry a small selection of older books simply because - well, if you've ever read Fahrenheit 451, you'd know why. I'm a book junkie, and old books are in a certain sense like our elderly, and they should be revered - at least if they are worth reading (the books I mean - of course, the elderly should always be treated with love and respect regardless). ;P

I really look forward to continuing to share what I couldn't possibly keep to myself (I've tried!) - my inspirations, thoughts, and loves, all poured out in a variety of mediums which will invariably make their way into my shop. I welcome any critiques viewers may have and am more than open to hearing from you.

Pax,
Maggie

I am a housewife and mother, an itty-bitty entrepreneur with delusions of grandeur (c'mon aren't we all? ;P), and a lover of all things regency and high middle ages. My favorite quote is "everybody gets theirs"; it really helps to keep me grounded.

Hello and welcome to Magi Gifts and Treasures! When you buy from me, you buy a piece of my time and inspiration, a piece of myself and the things that draw me out. It is that connection between seller and buyer which attracted me to Etsy in the first place.

Here we have the feel of a local market, without three different middle men between me and you, or myself and the myriad other inspiring sellers that I've seen on Etsy. I'm a mother who wouldn't have the chance to share anything on this kind of scale without a marketplace like this, and I really hope to make this shop a success. Thanks for checking it out, Magi
