About

Makino Studios shares Zen humor and insight

Annette Makino started Makino Studios in 2011 to share her Japanese-inspired art with the world. She combines sumi ink and watercolor paintings with original haiku and other words to convey Zen humor and insight.

Her greeting cards are available in select stores in Northern California and beyond, and she offers cards, signed prints, art calendars and custom pieces through this Etsy shop.

She regularly shows her original paintings at art exhibits and fairs. She also creates custom pieces to honor life passages and other events. Annette's haiku have won awards and been published in many haiku journals and anthologies.

You are invited to explore the online gallery of her work and her blog on the creative process, both at makinostudios.com.

Welcome to the online store for Makino Studios. I paint with sumi ink that I grind in an ink stone, adding color with Japanese watercolors. I apply the ink and paint onto paper with bamboo brushes. Each piece includes an original haiku or other words. As is traditional in Asian art, I stamp each painting in red with one of my personal seals.

Much of my work is inspired by the Japanese tradition of haiga, artwork combined with haiku so the image and words deepen and enrich each other. I also draw on the Japanese custom of etegami, painting and mailing postcard art with a few well-chosen words.

My goal as an artist and writer is to help people find joy and meaning in their daily lives and deepen their connections with the people they love.
