Announcement   My Christmas in July sale starts today! The coupon code is JULYXMAS17. 25% off of EVERYTHING in my shop. This is the only sale I run all year, and it only lasts until the 25th of July. So check your birthday lists, stock up for those baby showers, and don't forget about Christmas...

I make handcrafted wooden toys. It's important to me to have toys that will last and still look good ten years from now. I prefer not to paint and instead use different types of wood to achieve different colors. I believe in nice, rounded corners and edges. I like to make toys with simple designs that won't break easily. Toys should be beautiful, durable, and natural.

Check out my blog: www.mamamadethem.wordpress.com for giveaways, reviews, recipes, plus everything you ever wanted to know about your toymaker!

Enjoy!

My 2 1/2 year old grandson loves it. It's fun for him to lift the crane, push the vehicle and put the people in and out. Thank you.

Such a perfect set!! The wood is smooth and will not hesitate to let my toddler play. Well done.

About

Mama Made It!

When my son was one and a half, I moved back in with my parents until I could find another live-in nanny job. I was pretty broke, but I had just learned about the wide world of wooden toys, particularly the Waldorf style ones. Since I was poor, I didn't buy any.

Then I read on a forum about making wooden animals with a scroll saw, and I thought, I can do that! So I racked up some more credit card debt, and bought a scroll saw, and made my son some animals and some other toys for Christmas.

It was FUN! I slowly built up my workshop (then located in my parents' barn), relying more on craigslist than my credit card now, and I opened an Etsy shop in March 2009. I had maybe four sales by September of that year, but I kept making more things, and going to craft shows, and suddenly, Christmas time rolled around, and the orders started rolling in.

At the time I had a nanny job (not a live-in), so I was working until late at night, with the baby monitor right next to me, so i could run in when my son inevitably woke up screaming. But I survived, and with my Christmas money, I bought a conversion van.

I took out all but 2 seats, added a "kitchen" and a bed, and some lighting. Then I loaded it up with toys, my scroll saw, and some wood. For 6 months we traveled around, mostly in Florida (as it was winter). I sanded keys and animals on the beach while my son made friends with everyone we met.

But then fall rolled around, and I was tired of the road, and started looking for housing. In West Virginia, we found it: a house for $4,000, and the roof didn't even leak. It didn't have a working furnace, but it had plugs for my tools, and it was dry, so we called it home.

We've been there ever since. After that first freezing winter, we got a furnace. And the next year we bought a station wagon (the van became a liability after we moved in, so we walked).

This shop has evolved with every step of our journey, and the story of our life is the story of our shop. As I could afford it, I added tools. Most of the original ones were dirt cheap from craigslist, and I've been slowly replacing them over the years with nicer, newer ones.

I work in my basement and my living room. I play games with my homeschooled son and put wheels on cars at the same time. Life, work, and play weave together in a seamless web here at Mama Made Them.

I'm a single mother of a 9 year old boy. I started making him toys when he was one, and started selling them soon after. Since then, we have taken the business on the road, living in our van, before settling down in West Virginia.

Hi! It's my passion to make natural, lasting toys that your kids can pass down to their kids. Wooden toys, made from hard woods, will last as long as they are taken care of, but they can also decay and return to the earth once they are no longer wanted.

What do we believe?

-toys should be open-ended, multi-use
-they should be quality
-they should be nontoxic
-toys should last as long as you want them to, and then return to the earth to nourish the trees
-they should be beautiful

A child can incorporate an open-ended toy into his or her play in multiple ways (blocks can be anything, figures can act out any scene, etc.). A closed-ended toy only has one purpose (i.e. press this button, hear this song, watch this light up).

Open-ended toys encourage:
-Imagination
-Creativity
-Work (think Tonka trucks in the sandbox versus Bob the Builder computer game)
-Ingenuity
-producing, rather than consuming (open-ended toys can be used over and over again in many different ways)
