About

"Ambassador for Hawaii Coffee" & "Hawaii's Fashionable Coffee Bags" ~ Tanya M. Kearns, Manila Extract

Who am I?
My story began the summer of 1974. I was born to a Filipino father and an American mother and was raised in the American South, thus Manila Extract is more or less a play on words. I'm a little bit island girl and a little bit country all wrapped up with a southern drawl. I've lived most of my life in the great state of North Carolina but after being married in Maui and many years of hard work and lots of determination, my surfboard shaper husband and I made Hawaii our home in 2008.
Footnote - Just in case you're wondering, I earned an education and a successful professional life prior to Manila Extract. I learned all too quickly that my Psychology degree wasn't needed to realize that we're all a little crazy :). Professionally, I was fortunate enough to have a successful career in real estate. I learned all too quickly that money doesn't buy happiness.

Why do I give to charity?
In 1996 I visited the Philippines for the first time as a member of a missions group from Emmanuel College. The homeless and victimized children hit close to home. After graduation in 1997 I went back to the Philippines. I volunteered and lived at an orphanage with children who were victims of abuse, worked with youth in various churches, was involved in prison ministry and medical missions in remote villages. It was a life changing experience. Although I can't be physically present in the Philippines today, I hope my talents can bless children like those I met and came to love while I was there.

What Charity do I support and why?
A portion of the proceeds from the products I make and sell are given to Compassion International, a "Christian child advocacy ministry". I support Compassion International because they focus not only on the child's physical, social and economic needs but their spiritual needs as well. Compassion International is ranked as a Four Star Charity through Charity Navigator, is an accredited charity through the Better Business Bureau and is a Charter ECFA (Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability) Member.
