About

The French Way of Life

My husband and I live in a small town in France beside the River Isle which flows through Perigueux into the Dordogne. We have an enormous collection of antique and vintage prints, mainly from our life in England. Now located in France, with its plethora of "brocantes" and "vide greniers", we are in an ideal place to find treasures for your delectation.
Below you will find information which I hope will help when choosing prints:
COMPUTER MONITORS
Computer monitors vary in their rendering of colour, partly because monitor settings can be different and partly because the colour is light-based and looks different to the eye than the colour reflected from a piece of paper. This means that any print you buy may look slightly different from its appearance on your screen.
PRINT DEFINITIONS
To make sure customers know exactly what they are buying, I explain below the meaning of the word 'print' as used in my shop.
VINTAGE PRINTS and ANTIQUE PRINTS
These are mainly old reproduction prints, many taken from books that are out of print and already falling apart. They differ from modern reproduction prints in that the printing methods are different. They could be wood engravings, steel engravings, lithographs, chromolithographs, etc. I usually specify in the listing. The prints come in varying condition (see paper below).
BOOK PLATES
Book plates are illustrations printed separately from the book and bound in at production. They are often on different paper more suitable for their printing, and usually of a finer or higher quality than the text pages. Sometimes they are 'tipped-on' or lightly glued along one edge to a backing paper for support. Full-page illustrations are usually glued along the spine edge to an adjacent text page. If the former, they are blank on the reverse. If the latter they can be blank or printed on the verso with another illustration. Such details would normally be mentioned in the description.
BOOKPLATE (one word) or ex libris
This is a label bearing the owner's name or other identification that is pasted usually on the inside cover of a book.
ANTIQUE
I use the word as it is used in the UK, meaning over 100 years old, give or take a couple of years. In the US, antique often means over 50 years old.
ARTISTS' PRINTS
These are prints actually made by the artist. They can encompass all types of print methods including lino-cuts, wood-cuts, and lithographs. They are usually made on a small scale, often in limited, numbered and signed editions. Because of the printing methods used, each print can be different.
These are very special and can be very expensive! I only occasionally sell these.
ORIGINAL PRINT
To avoid confusion with artists' prints, I tend to use this description sparingly. I might say 'original page' taken from a book or 'original book plate' taken from a book, or 'original image'.
PAPER DESCRIPTIONS
Old, vintage and antique paper can be discoloured. This can be caused by the effect of acidity, micro-organisms or iron particles in the paper. It can be that the paper itself is acid or the paper can have been stored in certain atmospheric conditions.
Usually the effects are quite charming, although not to everyone's taste!
Brown spots are known as 'foxing'.
A general discoloration is known as 'tanning' or 'age-toning'.
The end papers of a book can be tanned, whereas plates from the same book might not be discoloured. They could be made of different paper or just not exposed to the same air as the endpapers.
Old book plates are often mildly yellowed around the margins, leaving the print itself clean.
It's a good idea to look at the scan carefully to see any imperfections. The scans I make are usually done just before listing and so should represent the pictures accurately. Occasionally I have more than one copy of a print in which case your print might differ very marginally from the scan.
FRAMING
To keep your print stable you have to look after it. Very expensive prints deserve the use of archival materials which are always acid-free. All prints will change colour if left in direct sunlight. This will happen even with the best quality modern pigment inks.
MY SHOPS
I now have three shops, this one with mostly original vintage prints, some reproduction prints and the odd bit of artwork thrown in. My bookshop, which sells a few quirky handmade books along with bookbinding tutorials, can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/marcadeartspress
My newly-opened shop, just for new archival prints, is here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MarcadeDigitalPrint
