I am so happy to finally be able to call myself an artist!

When I left college many years ago, I had to make a decision. Should I attempt a career as an artist or work in IT as a computer programmer. I chose the latter as it seemed a less risky career choice, but never gave up the dream that one day I would create art in some form or another.

I left my IT job of 28 years about 5 years ago and began my quest to make that dream a reality. To be honest, I didn’t really know where to start, and my initial fear of failure made me cautious.

My first idea was more of a craft than art. I remembered how much I loved my rag doll when I was a child, so decided I would have a go at making one similar. After a few failed attempts and some hilarious results, I managed to make a doll that actually looked human and loveable! I went on to make and sell 3 sizes of doll which I sold in the UK and also overseas in the US, Canada, France and Australia.

My success with doll-making gave me the confidence to attempt painting, which was always what I really wanted to do. I began with portraits of famous celebrities. At around that time my daughter, who was organising exhibitions at the ‘Boston Tea Party’ a local café, suggested an exhibition of my portraits. What an amazing opportunity! The exhibition was well received and the positive comments gave me the confidence to try something new.

I can’t remember exactly how or where I first stumbled across fluid acrylic art; probably searching for inspiration on the internet! I have always been fascinated by vibrant colour and contrast so pouring colours alongside each other in a free, expressive way was something I had to try! And so it began. Over the next few years I experimented with different mixes, techniques, substrates and additives. I found this to be the most obsessive and enjoyable form of art I have ever experienced, more like liquid sculpture than painting. Inspired by my cottage garden and my fascination with crystal formations and gemstones, I concentrated on recreating organic patterns and colour effects with the mediums. I am confident now that I have developed a unique style and dimension within this form of art.

It’s been a long journey but I believe that if you try hard enough at something you will succeed – and if you don’t, then you just have to try a bit harder. That thought keeps me going and makes me laugh!

I hope you find my story and my art inspiring.
