Announcement   Welcome to my shop!

I make paper mosaic jewelry and 2D art using a method that I devised myself. Most of my work features the use of recycled materials - thrift store books and discarded magazines, thrifted wood pieces (for the wall art), and vinyl scraps (for the jewelry). The paper is applied mosaic style. Consciousness of resources guides my choices. I am happy to convert some of these resources into a new, more appealing form. More art in the hands of people, and less garbage for the landfill!

About

My Evolution as an Artist

I have often thought it would be nice to be the kind of person who was super focused, always knew what they were about, and, by mid-life had reached the apex of their career. I am not that person. I have lived many places - Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Kansas, Indiana, Saskatchewan, and, since 1996, Oregon. I have pursued varied interests - parenting, piano and vocal music, nutrition, spirituality, literature. I have worked a variety of jobs - including 14 years as a library assistant. I am committed to nurturing my relationships with my husband, two daughters and extended family.

I was raised Mennonite. The Mennonite faith teaches a social gospel. There is an emphasis on service. For much of my life I had a hard time reconciling making art with my need to be of service to others. These have finally come together for me. It has only been within the last decade that I have become aware of my need for beauty. I believe that we all need beauty, but that some of us are more aware of that need. I believe that beauty is necessary for positive change - on a personal level and in a broader sense. Beauty impacts the spirit. It inspires, it elevates, it transcends. I think too that it plays a part in our moral development. I have come to see that making art is a high calling. A song, a film, a painting - they all have the potential power to affect spirit, and in turn, inspire change. I am sure that many artists don't have a need to justify what they do in this way, but, for me, it has been part of my journey.

I have been making my paper mosaic art since 2008 when my love for the look of tile work, and my disdain for the mess of tile work, became a process of using paper to simulate a mosaic tile look. It is a method that I developed on my own through trial and error. I have a love affair with paper. I have files of it - collecting it everywhere I go. I love color and I love playing with abstract design. Using paper to make mosaics seemed like a good fit. When I was in school, working on my bachelor's degree in art, I focused on watercolor painting. I happily painted with watercolors for some years after that - so, paper, in it's many forms, seems to be where it's at for me.

I hope that you find something of my work that pleases you. I look forward to serving my customers by adding a little beauty to their lives.
