About

About Our Process

Our silk printing process is a laborious one. The process is more of an art that take lots of practice to get it just right. Our scarves are steamed for 3 hours to set the inks. Our proprietary process gives us vibrant colors which show through on the reverse from 90% to 98% depending on the run of silk we are using. The process is not perfect because of many factors. The digital coating may vary from silk batch to batch. Silk has flaws that are hard to avoid. Sometimes there may be a very small ink drop on the print which is considered part of the art. With all of this we have proven to be the best in the industry with many excellent reviews pleasing people around the world. My biggest joy is when clients see their photos or art on a scarf. I receive many phone call with praises.

Little did I know that when in high school my first prom dress was made of a beautiful silk shantung would I be making scarves of the pure silk 40 years later.
It was my husband’s idea when we had our wide format printing business in College Park, FL. Robbie wanted to try a polyester fabric. The piece came out beautifully. We still have the original piece we printed way back then. We showed it around town and everyone loved it. So we started our search for the perfect printable silk. 6 years later after testing many types of silk, we found the perfect silk habotai. The silk took color well and the image showed well on the reverse. We were off and running. Then in 2007 Florida was hit by 3 hurricanes that came inland. All business were at a standstill for 3 months while repairs were made. By then our little business had suffered financially and we could not afford to keep our shop.

The only option was to move into our home and set up business using the internet. We were so low on money that the only thing I could think of to do was to bury myself in marketing through the internet. For 3 years we plugged away with marketing ourselves through social networks. Finally orders through PayPal started to come through.

The local newspaper discovered us and featured Designer Scarves by Marlena in a two page photo spread in the style section. that Wednesday evening and next morning, a week before Thanksgiving, the phone started to ring with folks ordering. We were on the right track, the rest is history!

Going on our 8th year in the industry we have made lots of people happy with unique gifts of silk with their photos and art.

I am very excited about working with you to create your unique custom silk scarf. I want you to be very happy with your purchase. These guidelines will help me to achieve a silk scarf you will cherish for a lifetime.

In selecting your photos choose those that are sharp and clear for reproduction.
Larger photos are better than small photos.
If your photos are digitized send them to me as is. Never try to up-res your photos. We use a special forensic software for that.

To digitize your art please use your camera setting at as high a resolution as possible. If you are not proficient in photography, get help from a friend.

I can help you decide if you photos will be suitable for reproducing onto silk. Just email them to me at info [!at] designerscarvesbymarlena.com
Send me your files;
Many clients send image files through Etsy. That works most of the time, but for large files, please use
www.wetransfer.com
to upload your files over 5 megs. This is free to use.

Marlena's scarves are custom made, one at a time.
We steam set the silk followed with setting baths after hemming.
Our scarves are hand washable.
The image shows almost equally on the reverse.
The silk is a soft habotai. Your scarf may seem stiff at first, this is because of the digital coating.
Your scarf will become softer after 2 or 3 wearings.

Designer Scarves by Marlena has our own proprietary printing method.
We have our own ink chemist. Our acid dyes called Symphonic Neon Inks, specially made for textiles and manufactured in the USA and biodegradable.
Our inks are vibrant and color ranges go beyond even Epson OEM inks.
Bottom line is, Our acid dyes out-perform reactive dyes or any other textile ink on the market.

We respect your artists rights and will never lend or sell you work to anyone, without your permission.

We are a Print on Demand Company and a cottage industry located in Florida
