About

Marvelous Mittens: Warm Hands, Warm Hearts

There is an old saying that goes, "Cold Hands, Warm Heart." That's what you say to someone whose hands are cold as a sort of cheering up comment—that cold hands must be indicative of a warm heart and kind spirit.

But, what about warm hands AND warm hearts? I think you can have both and I'm happy to say that, in a small way, I like to think I make that happen. In nearly every state in the U.S., up North in Canada, various countries in Europe, far away to Siberia, and even in Australia, people of all ages are wearing warm, wool mittens from my Marvelous Mittens shop here on Etsy.

I started making wool mittens in 2009 from repurposed wool sweaters. I like to say I "rescue" these sweaters from thrift shops. After purchasing the sweaters, I wash and dry them in a process called felting which somewhat fuses and tightens the fibers to make the wool extra warm against the stinging cold. After felting, the sweaters are ready for cutting. Each mitten is made up of three parts, plus the cuff. In addition to the wool outer part, there is also an inner lining made of fleece for greater warmth and softness. These are the softest, warmest mittens you can imagine.

As if the soft and warm elements were not enough, some of the mittens feature special embellishments—whimsical cats or dogs, decorated hearts, detailed ice skates, autumn acorns and oak leaves, to name a few. Many pairs of mittens are unique and one of a kind—destined for far away places and future snowman shaping or snowball fighting.

The funny thing is, I live in Houston, Texas where it isn't very cold and a few minutes of snow is a rare and exciting event. Some people will grow up only seeing and touching a dusting of snow once or twice in their lifetimes. Here, I seldom need to wear mittens or gloves even in the dead of winter. In fact, some fall and winter days we might comfortably wear shorts and barbecue outside on Thanksgiving or Christmas. However, the flip side is that In the summer, temperatures can be torturous and hover around 100 degrees for two to three months. Combined with humidity, the "feels like" temperatures are even higher. Ironically, when it is the hottest outside, is the time when I am busy making mittens inside.

Starting on July 1 of each year, I begin making and stockpiling mittens for September–January. That's when I'm busiest in my Etsy shop and when hundreds of pairs of mittens leave Texas for all over the world—or at least the coldest parts of the world.

I'm back to thinking about my assertion that there can be both warm hands and warm hearts. I like to think that Marvelous Mittens keep big and little hands warm and maybe even big and little hearts, too. The thought certainly warms my heart, too.
