Mary Grden, Fine Art Oil Painter and Print Maker

Feel the kiss of sea air or the serenity of place you have never been. Your view of my shop will take you to Santorini, Mykonos, Venice, or to see windows, doors, gates, chairs, umbrellas, patios, flowers, vines, stone walkways, Venice Canals, colorful houses, waterways, boats, harbors, and beachy? Is that a word? It is in my shop. My shop sells Prints I make from my Original Oil Paintings and current Originals for sale. Prints have a life, and I hope their final destination is actually your wall(s). Most are standard size, some are not. Prints that I make are digitally rendered by me first and are archived on digital discs, backup drives, and some photographs I have taken.

I have added a couple of photos of my original studio, above, which was a redwood barn on the back of our property originally without a roof or electricity. It took sometime to get the tin roof on; add the front entry and used picket fence; and pour the cobblestone walkway leading in; and lastly the wood burning stove and oh, under the caved in roof were the two bird houses we rescued. Like many artists an extra room in your home serves as a studio. I work has seen many shows, a few galleries, an artist's coop gallery, my own small gallery where Baywood Gallery was born, a gallery in a forest overlooking a lake and still, the one I remember fondly is my "barn". "It really doesn't matter where I create, it only matters that I do." Most artist have an extra room for their studio and I now do too with my original antique easel, my archival printer, the last of my beveled edged canvases ready for paint; a work table for prints and projects; two storage towers; a wonderful large window for painting light; walls full of my latest paintings and everything I need. I prize my glass Palettes for my oils that I can scrape clean, and all my storage for Archival Canvas and Watercolor Paper for my Prints.

My work is a "form of realism." I love painting texture with my knives, cracks and crevices, oldness, and from days gone by with my favorite "flat" brushes. Its fun Painting the detail of real life like the little wooden bird hanging under a shade that I captured one Sunday Morning in "Mykonos Walk." Or the yellow flower in a vase on a table along side of the salt and pepper in "Breakfast in Santorini", our breakfast room in a Santorini hotel. And here's a thought about hanging Fine Art in the laundry room. "Hanging out in Venice" is perfect and yes it is alright to hang fine art anywhere, it really is.

I am a self-taught artist that found my passion for painting at an early age, but getting a degree in Art was not in my life in the late 60's. I would be thirty-one when I decided to take a brief course in color mixing. From there I taught myself to sketch and perspective. Perspective is important to a realist because without it, nothing is cohesive. I learned how perspective related to form its position on the canvas; how it relates to color and changes objects from a 2-d format into a 3-D illusion. Color and perspective applied with each other in mind allow sun light to be cast, shadows to form and buildings to face east, west or places in between. It can tell us if the sun is to rise or set and give us the reality of an open door or window. it is a blessing to an Oil Painter and Print Maker as a"realist." God chooses all passions as "Blessings". I could have had a different passion, but I am glad he picked this one for me.

My first Art show was frightening, but sold all of my paintings and someone called my art,
"Fine Art". It wasn't the money that made me continue and it didn't measure my success; It
was the way I felt inside and I can still remember how fascinated I was that people actually loved my work. I will never forget that day. That is what an artist should feel and not forget.

In 1998, I was accepted into the Sausalito Art Festival in California. After the festival and with my success there, my husband and I were able to travel to Greece and Italy. We snapped nearly a 1000 pictures of doors and windows and houses along the way. When I came home, I quit my full-time job and became a full-time Artist and have been painting and printing ever since. Hope you enjoy the journey thru my Art and if you “favorite” me here in my shop, you can come along for the "ride."

"Oil painting is to me much like writing is to an author. Once the paint is put to the canvas, many more than one, can enjoy."
