About

I love for the detail in everything to be "just so!"

My two grandmothers greatly influenced my life, my persona, and my worldview. Thus, they have been honored in the naming of my shop.

MARY OLETA was an amazing woman who had exquisite talent and a heart of gold. She taught me from a very young age, among many other things-- how to sew by hand and machine, how to alter and modify, how to see an article for its basic style, staying blind to models' colors and prints-- and how to do so with quality, care, a bit of uniqueness, and love. She had a knack for attention to detail and taught me that quality components add up to quality outcomes.

MARJORIE MAE had great influence in making childhood near bliss for my sibling, cousins, and me (She is also credited for my near lifelong coffee addiction, serving mugs of it– albeit 3/4 milk– from a very young age!) with her kids' paradise backyard, serving big country style breakfasts, giving out pie tins for mud pies, loading gaggles of us in the pickup to go to Sunday School. Her love for providing joy to others with her generosity and positiveness continues to inspire me.

Though my interests and pastimes have ebbed and flowed and number quite a few, the love of sewing and stitching has never waivered. Ribbons and trims and embellishments have therefore always been an obsession, so making cute girly things like bows and flowers came quite naturally. I hope you enjoy a bit of what I have to share.

I'm a busy wife and mom and have been sewing and creating handmade things since I was a small child. Learning machine at age 11 in the late '70s, I've been sewing since before it was cool!

Thank you for browsing Mary Mae Handmade!

I have over 35 years' experience sewing both by hand and machine, chiefly fashion, costume, and home decor, and I have over 10 years' greeting card and paper crafts making experience. I became interested in making bows and other hair accessories when blessed by my own two little girls' entrances into the world.

I make a committed effort to fashion my clothing and accessories with high-quality materials for longevity and your enjoyment. I use high-quality fabrics, ribbon, embellishments, and hardware, and each bow or flower is stitched by hand with extra strong poly-glacé thread prior to being attached to hardware with high-temp glue. Raw edges are heat sealed to prevent fraying.

Generally speaking, most hair bows can be stitched onto an infant/toddler soft elastic (FOE) headband in lieu of a standard alligator clip; this can be done at no extra charge upon request. Crochet headbands are another option and available in limited colors. Please don't hesitate to ask what's currently available! :)
