Willowbrook Memories, Whistling Hollow, Wee Folk Creations and the Maureen Carlson Studio

Names tell a story. It was while walking to country school on Willowbrook Road in Elsie, Michigan, that I learned to treasure acorns and seedpods, pools of water where tadpoles swam, and the wonder that is an ever-changing brook. It was through reading the fantasy tales of C.S. Lewis and J.R .R. Tolkien that I came to appreciate names that invite images of gnomes, trolls, hobbits and elves. And it was the little clay characters themselves who inspired the name Wee Folk Creations, which I used at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.

What's in a name? If you look at the above names under which I've done business, you'll see that they started out very vague, moved through whimsy and finally settled at a very simple place: My Name. The funny thing is that now that my name is on the shop it is more than ever before a group collaboration!

It's true that husband Dan and daughter Renee have been involved in one way or another with my polymer clay career since 1974 when as a young mother I first put out items for sale at a street fair in Mentor, Ohio. But now if it weren't for them the shop listings would be quite sparse. Take away the food, which Renee makes, and the furniture, which Dan makes, and the molds, on which Dan and I collaborate, and this shop would start to collapse - held up only by the slim backbones of a few little Wee Folk Characters and those pages of tutorials and patterns.

So, thank you Dan. And thank you Renee. Now let's get back to work! There are fairy gardens to be filled and characters clamoring to be brought to "life". We're still on that journey that began with peering into those pools of water along Willowbrook Road. There's more to discover. More to explore. More to imagine into being. It isn't over yet! it's all good!

Thanks, everyone, for visiting - and for listening!

Once upon a time there was a girl who loved to make things. One day she met a handsome young man on a park bench on Mackinac Island. He loved to make things work. Forty-five years later and they are still imagining, creating and making it work!

Welcome to the Maureen Carlson Studio which features the work of artists Maureen, Dan and Renee Carlson.

It all began with a book about clay mushrooms back in the mid 70's, but eventually expanded into our family business, Wee Folk Creations. Along the way Maureen made a name for herself as a teller of stories and an expert in the use of polymer clay. You may even have one of her books, such as FIMO Folk or How To Make Clay Characters, in your library.

Dan, who values practical things, began using Maureen's models to create push molds so that others, too, could make expressive faces and hands. You can thank him for the push molds that we sell.

And you? It's your imagination that keeps us going. And your enthusiasm. Thank you very much!
