About

Creating Mauveine

It began with a simple "scrunch-and-dye" scarf. Which led to marbling. Which led to experimentation in surface design with a variety of techniques. With the help of my graphic designer son, his marketing genius wife, and my style and color expert daughter, Mauveine was born.

Discovering the myriad ways a piece of silk fabric can be decorated has led to the realization that Mauveine really is more about the unintentional and wonderful results that happen as I’m splashing and dabbling around which is fitting, considering the dye color mauveine came about as a happy accident in a lab. Each piece is absolutely unique. There is no overthinking here – it’s just me, the colors, and the fabric. The process is organic and natural; I just let the paint or dye do what it wants to do and the results are always a surprise! The finishing touches of handwork, stitching, and embellishing are done with thought and care.

The idea and reality of Mauveine has been not so much about planning, marketing, and sales as it has been about opening myself up to the business of art and creativity; playing with color and texture and patterns and bringing it all together to create artistic yet functional items, things that can be worn, used, and enjoyed on a daily basis.

I work as a medical transcriptionist but my heart belongs to creating beautiful things. I'm married with two grown children and six grandchildren. I garden and love working with my hands, making everything from dish soap to a gorgeous silk wrap.
