About

Donut worry!

My shop actually started with prints (illustrations and also printable PDF stationery) with no intention of going plush.

I designed and illustrated a whole set of signs to put up around the house when I lived with 5 other people back in 2010. One housemate didn't quite understand the idea of "if it's brown, flush it down". When my friends saw the signs I printed out, many of them wanted some for fun and one suggested opening up a shop on Etsy and selling prints. Cute stinky poop prints.

So that was how it all began.

Then, cleaning my room one day, I found some scrap felt in a box from a present I had made my brother and took those scraps and started cutting it up with no goal in mind. I cut a circle and then cut another circle. Maybe I was hungry at the time, but I ended up creating a plush donut randomly. I made a few, gave some away, and somehow got obsessed with making varieties of plush happy donuts.

Soon after experimenting with felt, I discovered the ability to design and print my own custom fabrics through Spoonflower. I made an impulse decision to purchase a basic sewing machine even though I had never actually used one before. Even with the fear of running my finger under the fast-paced needle, I began sewing simple things at first just to get used to the machine: pillow cases, small open-ended bags, flat fabric calendars. As I got used to the whir of the needle, I began sewing larger felt donuts and full pillows.

It was a whole new period in my life: learning about shipping both domestic and international, sewing, getting a business license, having the products I made with my very hands sold in local boutiques, and the perks of owning something. Overwhelming at first, but really fulfilling.

This "side project" of mine became even more fulfilling when I decided to have portions of my shop proceeds go to various charities. Early 2011, I began donating proceeds from my "ABC product" sales to organizations that supported children and education. I loved being able to have the extra pocket money to donate to causes I believed in.

As a full time graphic designer and gamer, it's refreshing to be able to step away from a screen every once in a while and take up soft fabric and have a happy face staring back at me an hour later. Although I'm prone to paper cuts and needle pokes, it's definitely fun and relaxing for me.

I draw donuts and play games. Sometimes I design things. Sometimes I sleep.
