Me Maahiset -us earthlings

Birds and animals, gnomes of course, fairies and tree-spirits, gods and goddesses; all manner of earthlings from the nordic pantheon to across our beloved globe. At the edge of the map, "There will be Dragons"...And penguins!

Me Maahiset, name of my ceramics workshop can be roughly translated " Us Gnomes", more specifically a certain kind of "earth gnome", finnish underground fae-folk, but it also quite literally means "Us Earthlings".

I usually sell my wares at nearby fairs and markets, but this spring, because of the covid pandemic closing all markets, I started an online shop at Etsy.
Fact is I did love traveling when young, and though it was mostly by train or bus, I did some journeys by plane as well. Later for ecological reasons I have decided to avoid flying altogether. But now, as millions less people are flying during these trying times, I thought maybe some small ceramic earthlings, even if shipped abroad, would not tip the ecological scales so bad :) . And, hopefully in the near future and changing world, people will prefer less traveling in person and more of an online cultural exchange.

My favorite ceramics firing techniques are Raku, wich originated in 15th century Japan, and Obvara, a medieval technique from Baltic countries, sometimes called Baltic Raku. Obvara gets an added plus from me for being a very ecological technique- it only uses common kitchen ingredients in the brew that is used to burn the coloration to a hot fired piece.

Both of them have an element of surprise that I love, a zen-like feel of nature taking it´s course and changing my designs, combined with the "heated action" of manipulating the results in the firing; old alchemy of the mysteries of earth, fire, air and water, and also knowledge of sheer modern chemistry- even with the best effort for something desired, something else is added, and every piece ends up unique and wild.
