Joseph Henry 1895 began with love for traditional crafting at its core. We offer a selection of apothecary products telling stories of heritage and adventure;
creating pieces for a simpler, sustainable lifestyle.

It really started

in 1895 when having sold his few worldly possessions, Joseph travels steerage across the ocean from the Baltics to the shores of South Africa. He then continues his journey covering over 1000 miles of wild and rugged terrain with a friend, horse, compass, pistol and dreams of a better life in a new land. He walks into Bulawayo, Rhodesia, just months before the second Matabele war, where he later sets up an outpost.

Joseph and his son Henry – a boxer, a mining engineer and a Hurricane fighter pilot during WW2 are the original adventurers of "Joseph Henry 1895".

Welcome! We're glad you've stumbled upon our amazing soaps and hopefully that means you're stocking up. If you are, here are a few things you should know about ordering from us:

The following items can't be returned or exchanged
Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
  • Custom or personalized orders
  • Perishable products (like food or flowers)
  • Digital downloads
  • Intimate items (for health/hygiene reasons)
Returns and exchange details
If you receive a product and it is not as you hoped, please let us know and we will do our best to make it right. Please contact us with your order details within 10 days of receiving the package.

Items must be returned in the original condition they were received, along with any tags or packaging. Return shipping costs are the customer’s responsibility. International customers will also be responsible for any duties and taxes that may apply.

We will gladly accept returns on products in new, unused condition with all tags and packaging intact. If you would like to return a product, please contact us with your order details within 10 days of receiving your order.

You may return your items for store credit or a full refund of the amount which you paid at the time of purchase. The buyer is responsible for return shipping.

Products that are ineligible for return include:
- Custom products
- Customized products
- Gift Cards
- Sale items
Returned goods are your responsibility until they reach us, so please make sure they are packed properly and cannot get damaged on the way. All goods will be inspected on return.

Refunds will be credited back to your original method of payment, and will post approximately three days after the date of processing.

Only products purchased directly through Joseph Henry 1895 may be returned. Joseph Henry 1895 products purchased from another retailer must be returned to the original seller.


If a product you receive is damaged, please contact us with your order details within 48 hours and include a photograph of the damage. If you receive an object and it is not as you hoped, please let us know and we will do our best to make it right.
All Canada orders are shipped 4 days a week, Tuesday through Friday, from Red Deer, AB, Canada.

We ship via Canada Post and try our best to process and ship orders within 2-3 business days or sooner. If you ordered from our waxed canvas selection, then it can take us from 1-2 weeks to complete your order as we need time to hand craft the item for you.

Please ensure your mailing address is correct at the checkout. We are unable to reroute shipments and can not be held responsible for lost or stolen packages.

All our prices include shipping and handling charges.


For Red Deer, AB residents or if you are placing a pre-order to be picked up at a craft-show, please proceed to and choose Red Deer option upon checkout to avoid shipping fees. We will arrange for a drop-off or pick-up at your convenience.


We are pleased to offer flat $15 shipping within Canada. Please allow 5-7 business days to receive your order.


All international orders are based on Canada Post fees as per size and weight of the package and include shipping and handling charges. Although we can not guarantee the delivery date, most international packages arrive at their destination within 2-4 weeks.


All international customers are responsible for any additional fees that may be charged on shipments by their country's customs office.
Additional policies and FAQs
Our Apothecary products are hand poured and made. There may be slight variations in colour, dimensions and texture. We make products in small batches and when they sell out we advise you to pre-order to make sure you will get the products from the next batch as they are created and/or cured. In case of pre-orders, we mail your order out as soon as all products are ready and back in stock.

We may accommodate certain customization requests that are not offered on our website. We will review any customization requests and let you know whether we can accommodate them and whether they will require any additional fees and/or additional lead time. Below are some examples of what changes we will be likely to accommodate or not:

- Longer/shorter bag strap or handles (would require an additional fee and/or lead time)
- Adding extra holes to straps
- Adding a shoulder strap to bags without (would require an additional fee and/or lead time)
- Custom branding for Apothecary order for Weddings and other occasions (would require an additional fee and/lead time of 2-3 months).
- Custom size order for Apothecary (half of the regular bar) and a bulk discount (would require a lead time of 2-3 months).
Not Possible:
- Changes in size or style of bags
- Bag colors other than the colors we offer
- Apothecary good other than what we offer
