A year ago I switched my creative attention and energy from painting to textile design. When I started I thought it would take me a month or two to design and print a collection and set up an Etsy shop. So welcome. Hope you enjoy exploring my shop. A brief word of "thanks" to all who have encouraged and supported me in finally hanging my "open for business" sign!

About

Textile to Painting and Back Again

I have this thing about textiles. My paintings the last few years have been inspired by antique textiles from all over the world: Indian silk saris, Venetian damasks, Japanese shibori, Persian brocades, Indonesian batik, to name a few! This textile reference shows up in my use of color and use of pattern. My fascination with textiles probably started with the saris, molas, tapestries and wall hangings my father would bring home from his travels.

In August 2017 I turned my creative energy to textile design from painting I have spent the last year developing this collection for my etsy shop. What is completely unique, original and personal about my designs are that they start with my paintings. I start with a digital detail of a painting, create a repeat pattern and then experiment with many layers of adjustments and modifications until I arrive at a destination I didn't know I was heading for.

My design process is very much like my creative process in painting: I start with a germ of an idea and begin working in a very experimental, trial-and- error sort of way until I reach the point where it is "right" and it is time to stop painting, often ending up somewhere quite different from where I thought I was headed when I started.

I hope my work brings something truly special to your home and gives you as much pleasure as it gives me in creating and making it.

Thank you for visiting my shop. Please get in touch with any questions or comments. I would love to hear from you!

All the best,
Melanie
