A HORRIBLE transaction! The seller doesn't know squat about vintage or fabrics. Can't tell a difference between a plush, stretchy velour (which is what she claimed she was selling me) and a cheap, non-stretchy acrylic! In addition to that, the dress had a badly patched-up hole that wasn't even mentioned in the description. When I wrote to her saying that her description didn't match the actual dress, she rudely replied "we don't do returns"!!! Had to open a case through PayPal to which she never even bothered responding! A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE ALL THE WAY AROUND! STAY AWAY FROM THIS STORE!!! RUDE, IGNORANT & ARROGANT SELLER!

We take every precaution to make sure our customers are happy with their purchases. We tried to accommodate every inquiry you sent regarding this beautiful dress by responding in a timely fashion, reviewing your swatch samples, lowering the price and reserving it for you. In our description we said it “feels like velour” and after reviewing the sample swatch link you sent we replied that it “was close”. We have never received a case from PayPal or Etsy for that matter. And while yes it’s true that we cannot issue refunds, we don’t think our response was rude, but we’re sorry if you think it was. Again, we’re sorry that you weren’t satisfied with your purchase.

Our Story is Vanessa's Story
I grew up wearing the finest designers. Cashmere and velvet were not unusual in my sister’s closet or mine. Calvin Klein and Norma Kamali skirts littered our bedroom floor. Courreges woven halters and Balmain dresses make a steady appearance in our old family photos.
This luxury really spoiled us. We came to appreciate all that was beautiful in fabrics and design. My sister and I would pour over Vogue and battle to be the “it” girl on each page; neither of us ever fitting the bill of the models in our magazines.
Years into this fashion bliss, the most awful thing happened. The advertising agency where my grandmother had worked as a cleaning woman was relocating to Cali and gone were our fashion perks. Well, that changed everything. We were poor and in no way able to afford the luxuries we’d been given. That began a fashion creative process that has lasted me a lifetime and a love of vintage clothing; thru vintage I was able to live my fashion dreams.
I love clothes. But won’t spend a mint on them. I am creative and love to make something out of little. Quality and design are my driving force. I want every woman to feel special and thought of... that is the goal here at Mercantile Republic.
ALL HAIL OUR CURATOR!! Vanessa discovered design early, after her mother caught her melting crayons on the radiators to add color. In Vanessa’s studio she creates works, inspired by Harlem; with the same esthetic obsession she’s always had.
