Merging Story Pottery - 2 lives, 2 perspectives, one love
To be functional or not was never the question, rather it was "what is the story", what message can we speak that will resonate with others. Because we each had numerous voices to express, there was no correct answer. We found when we combined our voices, it felt different, it created more. Sometimes more tension, sometimes more interest, sometimes more excitement, but always more value.
Pottery is the tool, the vessel for much of our expression. Everything is original (at least from our perspective) and hand crafted every step of the way. We are usually in the studio 7 days a week, creating what we love and loving that we are living a life we get to create. Oh yeah, it is work, make no mistake about it. While it can be intense,it's a labor of satisfaction and we don't believe in shortcuts.
We have a selection of old factory and machine letter press dies we use to imprint our ceramic items, along with many patterns we have designed ourselves. We like to think our items fall under the "Urban Pottery" heading, but you can be the judge of that.
So while we don't make mugs and coffee pots (at least not many of them) we do make many decorative items that can still be functional. Our vases hold water and the dishes can be used, yet we love that people who buy our items find their own unique way and places to display them in their homes
Our items tend to be labor intensive, from the design to construction. We don't dip, we hand glaze each item, which is a much longer process, but it gives us the results we are looking for. Most items are fired in our kilns twice, the second time to well over 2200 degrees.
