Just a couple of masks in progress on the desk. The Anubis was a custom order. The raven was just for fun.

"Rather than concealing, a good mask reveals what is hidden inside."

"Merimask Designs" is Andrea Masse-Tognetti, a self-representing artist from western New York. Andrea is self taught in the art of leather mask making and has been working exclusively with leather sculpture for over twenty years.

In 2006, Merimask created several designs for Cirque Du Soleil. Currently, a synthetic version of her mask "Frivole" is in mass production and available in Cirque Du Soleil gifts shops everywhere.

In 2008, Andrea was invited to create over fifty exclusive masks for the Muscle Musical production "Magicarade", in Tokyo Japan. She appeared on several national Japanese television shows with her masks throughout the 2008-2009 holiday season.

In 2009, Merimask Designs created masks for several stage productions in the United States, including the Jacksonville Nutcracker Ballet in Florida and the Circus Juventas production of "Yulong" in Minneapolis. In October of the same year, Andrea appeared on the Martha Stewart Show and demonstrated her mask-making technique on live national television.

In 2010, Merimask Designs was commissioned to create several wolf masks for Halloween season window displays throughout the United States. The masks were featured in Ralph Lauren Rugby store windows everywhere.

In 2011, A quartet of Merimask's white wolves were featured in an international cosmetics advertising campaign. The wolf masks were used in a fashion photo shoot for Lise Watier Cosmetiques "Neiges" perfume, shot in Toronto. The advertisements appeared throughout Canada during the 2011 holiday season. Also in 2013, Merimask's black fox mask appeared on episode 304 of the ABC hit TV show "Once Upon A Time".

In 2014, Merimask has created three designs exclusively for Katy Perry's "Prismatic" world tour. Her Egyptian masks are featured during the song "Dark Horse" and are worn by Katy's dancers (costume design by Marina Toybina).

In 2015 and again in 2016, Andrea's Horus Egyptian falcon mask was featured on the TV show "The Librarians".

Andrea is constantly creating in her tiny studio. Expect more good things to come from it soon!

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
  • Money Order
Payment
NEW ...6/29/2012...I am now accepting direct credit card payments through Etsy. You no longer need a Paypal account to make purchases from my shop. Just select the credit card payment option after you click the green "add to cart" button and you'll be able to make your purchase instantly, directly, with any major credit card.

Etsy also accepts Paypal. You can use a credit card with Paypal if you want, or you can set up a paypal account with money from your bank account (it's very safe; I've had one for years with no trouble. Go to www.paypal.com for more info).

I also accept personal checks or money orders (within the USA only...international funds can only be processed by Paypal). You'll see those options on each listing; they'll also be made available to you when you click to purchase. You'll get all the info you need to fill out your check or money order when you click to buy.

Keep in mind I have to wait for the payment to clear before I can mail off your item (or add your order request to my order queue). This can add a few days...sometimes a week, to processing time. If you are using Paypal and have to transfer money from your bank account to your Paypal account (paypal calls this an "e-check"), there will be a 3-5 day delay before your item can be shipped, while that transfer is pending. I'm unable to ship until that amount clears. Paypal will let you know when that happens.

I send confirmation e-mails when all items are paid for, processed, and shipped. The e-mail will contain shipping information, estimated delivery time, your tracking numbers, and a link to the online tracking website.

* I am not responsible for shipping errors caused by incorrectly updated Paypal accounts.
Shipping
All items shipped domestically via USPS Priority mail. Items in stock will be shipped within 24 hours of order placement & take 2 to 4 business days to arrive (usually 3). All masks will be shipped with delivery confirmation tracking numbers provided. Insurance provided only upon request (an additional fee will be invoiced to the buyer via Paypal).

I send confirmation e-mails when all items are paid for, processed, and shipped. The e-mail will contain shipping information, estimated delivery time, your tracking numbers, and a link to the online tracking website.

APO/MPO orders: I am happy to ship to a military address (MPO), however, due to the way military shipments work, I cannot offer complete tracking abilities for items shipped to these addresses. With an APO/MPO shipment, you can only track your package through the USPS site until it passes out of the USPS system and into the military delivery system. Service for APO/MPO shipments, once it is out of the hands of the USPS, can be sporadic and subject to delays. There is no way to track military shipments, and no way to estimate delivery time. I can only provide tracking up to the point when the package leaves the USPS system and passes into the military system. I am only responsible for your item while it is within the civilian USPS system.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: I have upgraded all my shipping fees to accommodate International Priority shipping via USPS. All international orders will be shipped via this method, as it is faster by far than first class registered. 6-10 days avg for most European and Australian deliveries, slightly less time for Canada. Do keep in mind that during certain times of the year & in some countries, it may take longer. Due to the vastly confusing and erratic nature of international customs and duties, I can take no responsibility for any international package once it leaves my hands. I will provide the customs tracking number via Etsy's service, for your records, which will allow you to track your package's progress through the system. All non-mask items will be shipped as inexpensively as possible; 1st class international mail.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: Custom forms are filled out with exact purchase information and we do not falsify prices or mark as a gift.

I send far too many packages overseas. Over 40% of my sales come from Europe. This means that, unless I accompany each sale with an official customs invoice, the package will be flagged and I will be fined, and you won't get your merchandise.

I have to report each sale to a broker and attach a complete, unfalsified account for each package because I ship so often, to international destinations.

International customers need to consider there may be additional taxes, duties or other fees required upon receipt of shipment. Please check with your local post office for fees.

Sorry, but my items can NOT be sent to Italy, as leather goods are prohibited as an import. For more information, see the USPS website "prohibited exports to Italy" page here: http://pe.usps.com/text/imm/il_008.htm#ep4713921

***IMPORTANT!!*** PLEASE, all buyers, review your shipping information before you click to purchase an item. Your Paypal shipping info must match your order address, because the default address will be the one on your Paypal account. If you wish me to send an item as a gift, or to a different address, you must manually enter that address into your Paypal account information (you are allowed more than one address there...there is a section for "gift" addresses) before you click to order. I am not responsible for shipping errors caused by incorrectly updated Paypal accounts.

****This shop does not ship items to countries that do not recognize intellectual property rights, and that do not comply with international copyright protecting laws. Copyright for all designs retained by Merimask Designs.
Refunds and Exchanges
Unless extra insurance is requested/purchased by buyer, seller is not responsible for theft, damage, or loss in the mail. For hygienic reasons there are no returns of masks...all purchases are final.
Additional policies and FAQs
ON CUSTOM ORDERS:
Due to demand, the artist can only accept custom orders on a limited basis. Any design created in the past can be re-created (just check out the "sales" section to see masks that have been made). However, due to unclaimed custom work, all future custom orders will have to be pre-paid in full, no exceptions. Apologies for the inconvenience. Most orders completed in three to four weeks, except during busy seasons like Halloween, the gift-giving holiday season, and Mardi Gras. Allow extra time for shipping; 2 to 3 days via Domestic USPS...8 to 16 business days for international orders outside the USA.

CUSTOM COLORS require an additional 20%

CUSTOM DESIGNS require an additional $50 fee. If conceptual sketches are requested, there is a $25 fee for each sketch generated, $50 for color. All copyrights for conceptual art are retained by Merimask Designs/Andrea Masse-Tognetti.

HOW CUSTOM ORDERS WORK: Please contact me through the front page of my shop with your request. Links to images of the mask you like (or any images you would like to include for reference) can be attached or, if they are big, a URL link to a hosted image is fine too. If you contact me from a "sold" listing page, this will be easiest since the image link will already be included (assuming you want an item exactly like it or similar to it).

Really very complicated requests based on very exact brand new ideas may be impossible, as I may not have the time/energy required to generate an entirely new design from scratch (especially during Halloween/Mardi Gras season when it is a madhouse here. Halloween orders start rushing in around August, so...). Links to reference pictures/ patience/ a fairly clear mental picture of what you are interested in/ photoshop skills/ willingness to let the artist do her best interpretation of your idea...these are all key to streamlining the custom process.

You might want to send me some links to images you like...motifs you want included in your design. That's a good way to go. I don't charge an additional rate for custom work unless you want me to submit sketches. That takes time, so there is a fee for that (fees listed above). Generally, if you describe what you want and supply some researched images, I can work from that. I charge based on complexity of carving/size of mask/complexity of shaping. Look to my other items for ideas of my price range.

Please take some time to look through my complete gallery, here: www.merimask.deviantart.com/gallery/ On the left there are sub-genres to make your search more precise. Using previous mask designs as a reference point to start from makes the custom order process easier.

I will contact you with a quote for the cost of your project. At that time, you can choose to place your order or not. You must contact me back, agreeing to price and terms, and only at that time will I create a Custom Order Listing for you to purchase. I will then contact you with a link to your personal custom order listing, once I have it up. Once you purchase the listing, your mask order will be added to my order queue. Your order will usually take about 4 weeks to complete from date of purchase (though during peak busy seasons like Halloween, Mardi Gras, and the Holidays, times may be extended due to demand). Wait times do not include shipping time (2 to 3 days USA, 8 to 12 international) and as I said, during busy season the order queue can be longer, so plan accordingly. I will send you a follow-up e-mail with tracking info once it is in the mail. PLEASE NOTE: I will not begin an order or even add it to my queue until you pay for it...all custom orders are paid in advance.

ON HOW THE MASKS FIT: I shape my masks to fit generically...they fit most adult faces. The mask rests snugly across the forehead, when tied to the face, and rests on the bridge of the nose and cheekbones. In this way, they fit almost anyone. I do not need face measurements from you, and wearers with wider or narrower faces can flex the masks enough to accommodate them easily.

ON WEARING GLASSES WITH MASKS: Because they are molded to fit snugly to a human face, they do not work well with glasses. Some of the smaller masks may have glasses worn over them, but no guarantees that it will work with every type of frame. Also, since all glasses and frames are different, there is no way for me to mold a mask that will fit over glasses. The best solution is contacts or don't wear glasses while wearing the mask.
The only other solution is for me to make a steampunk mask with TWO goggle eye cups, and you can glue/customize old glasses lenses to fit inside those cups yourself (there are tutorials on line). I can't guarantee the outcome or take any responsibility for prescription eyewear that is modified to fit inside a mask assemblage, as I am legally unable to do so (not a licensed optician or optometrist). Only you can choose to customize a mask in this way. Double goggle cups add $100 to any mask design.

To see a photo gallery of my masks being worn on many different types of faces, go to this site here:
http://merimask.livejournal.com/254673.html

ON FULL-FACE MASKS: I'm sorry, but I just do not make full-face masks that completely cover your face from forehead to beneath the chin, All my designs are half-masks, which means they extend out on your nose bridge and do not come back in to conform below the nose to your lower face.

This is for several reasons. Mainly because I use 8oz leather which is very thick...too thick to be flexed outward to allow nose/breathing space and then come back all the way in towards the chin. I'd have to make a mask in several pieces to allow that, and that's just not my style. Thinner leather masks can be folded and molded to an entire face, but thinner leather can't be carved, so I prefer the detail of my carving over a more fitted option.
Also, half-masks are the perfect choice for comfortable mask-wearing. They allow free breathing, air circulation, and even eating and drinking while being worn. Also, they are one-size-fits-most. A full-face design will not fit every kind of face. Some faces are longer than others. A full-face mask that is too short is intensely uncomfortable if it is made of rigid leather (as mine are)...it'd hinder breathing and talking, and it would be impossible for me to offer a full-face design that could fit anyone, as my half-masks do.
If you want a full-face mask, you're better off with something made of latex, or a hood-style costumed head that will completely cover your entire head and shoulders. I do neither of those types of mask.

ON HOW THE MASKS ARE WORN: I am currently transition all my mask designs to use round 4mm cords, with a sliding cord clasp. You just press the button and slide the clasp for a completely secure, adjustable fit. I don't use elastic, because I can't custom-fit elastic for all the different head sizes there may be out there. However, I thread the cords through holes punched securely in the leather. It will be very easy for you to replace it with an elastic band, and you can custom-fit it to be the right length for you.

Some of my masks come with heavy duty 1/2 inch wide leather straps and buckles. I usually only put these on my heaviest, steampunk-themed masks. If you require a strap and buckle on any other mask, there will be an additional $35 fee. Just contact me first and I can add that option to your mask order before you purchase.

If the mask is to be purely decorative (hung on the wall and not worn) you can request organza ribbons instead of the cord. No extra charge. Just leave a note in the "message to seller" box when you click to buy.

ON DURABILITY: My masks are constructed with durability in mind, and are made to be used. They are especially comfortable and sturdy for use in theatrical performances, or for other strenuous use. Here is an unsolicited testimonial from a happy client:

***"Hi Andrea! You made me an amazing mask well over a year ago. the FoxFire Kitsune mask has seen a lot of performances and made a lot of people happy by your work. However I have an amazing story to you, your mask saved my life!

I had an accident at performance a few weeks ago. As you may or may not know I am a fire dancer and I perform with your mask. During a performance a good portion of fuel and fire hit my face. However your mask blocked the majority of the flame and i was able to remove the mask without issue and in time. I only suffered minor burns to my face and ego, however your mask was UNHARMED!! Simply amazing when you consider the amount of fire that hit my face!

If i had bought another type of mask surely it would melted or been destroyed. This can only be a testament to your amazing craft work with leather.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I knew i made the right choice in ordering my team's masks from you, keep up the good work!! thank you thank you!"***

ON CARE: Nothing special re: care. The masks are surface-sealed, so don't use any oils or leather creams because they'll just make it greasy and gummed-up. If it gets dusty or dirty, wiping with a damp cloth is fine. The outside is waterproof but the inside is not sealed and only water-resistant (to make them less scratchy for wearing). Don't worry about perspiration on the inside...leather of that thickness can take it without any trouble. If it gets REALLY soaked somehow (like in a heavy rain or dropped in water) just set the mask propped someplace where it can dry in peace and it will be fine. Don't worry about drying/cracking; I use only the highest quality vegetable tanned leathers. No alcohol has been used in the tanning process so this kind of leather maintains its flexibility for decades.

ON SELLING BLANK MASKS: I'm sorry, but I only sell completed masks. They are each a reflection of my own artwork, and every mask I make is a copyright-protected design. I don't allow augmentation or craft decoration of my masks for this reason. If you do a simple Google search online for "blank masks" or "craft masks" or "unpainted masks", you will find hundreds of online sites that sell blank masks for decoration in a variety of materials.

Sizing details

I shape my masks to fit generically...they fit most adult faces. The mask rests snugly across the forehead, when tied to the face, and rests on the bridge of the nose and cheekbones. In this way, they fit almost anyone. I do not need face measurements from you, and wearers with wider or narrower faces can flex the masks enough to accommodate them easily.

Care instructions

The masks are surface-sealed, so don't use any oils or leather creams because they'll just make it greasy and gummed-up. If it gets dusty or dirty, wiping with a damp cloth is fine. The outside is waterproof but the inside is not sealed and only water-resistant. Felt has been added to the interior pressure points for added comfort.

If your mask gets REALLY soaked somehow (like in a heavy rain or dropped in water) just set the mask propped someplace where it can dry in peace and it will be fine. Don't worry about drying/cracking; I use only the highest quality vegetable tanned leathers. No alcohol has been used in the tanning process so this kind of leather maintains its flexibility for decades.

Gift wrapping and packaging

My masks arrive in new boxes, individually wrapped in plastic bags and padded with tissue paper and any additional packaging that might be needed to assure that there will be no damage during transport. Gift wrapping (bright tissue paper, seals, and any message you might wish to include) is available upon request.

Leave any gift messages in the "message to seller" field when you click to purchase your mask. I'll make sure to print it out and include it, free of charge.
