About

From Israel to NYC art school

Michal is an Israeli-born designer who has been working in New York since the 1970's. Her pieces are heavily influenced by Middle Eastern aesthetics, Judaism, and Victorian jewelry. She lives in New York with her husband and three children. Michal holds a Master's Degree in studio art from New York University and a bachelor's degree in graphic art from the University of Maryland. Michal has also won the Ben-Yitzhak medal for Distinguished Children's' Book illustration.

Michal started designing jewelry and selling it at craft fairs in order to support herself during graduate school. Demand for her jewelry quickly grew. After graduation, Michal devoted increasing time to her jewelry and her husband, Michael, joined in, managing the business. Over the past twenty years, the company has expanded significantly, but the underlying premise of Michal's work has remained.

Now all the jewelry is handmade in Michal's NYC studio, with the help of many fellow artisans who you can see in the images below. Attached to the studio is the office space, where Michael and fellow employees take care of shipment, customer service, and logistics. The office is a lively and fun place to work. With no dividing walls, all the employees are able to see each other, and Laila, the office dog, roams about freely. A unique small business where most employees stay for 10+ years.

The process begins with Michal, who singlehandedly designs the new collections each season. After making hundreds of prototypes by hand, Michal presents her work to the studio. All the employees come together and discuss which pieces will be good sellers, which pieces fit our aesthetic, and which pieces should ultimately be cut from the collections. The remaining new pieces are then taken to wholesale craft shows around the country, where gallery and shop owners place orders on them. The artisans get to work recreating each piece by hand and the customer service team ships the pieces off. After each season we reflect on trends, popular pieces, and begin brainstorming for the next round of collections. All the while adding new pieces to our Etsy shop and retail website!

In recent years, Michal has divided her time between her jewelry design and her ceramic mosaic work. The inspiration for her mosaics draws from her longtime interest in how individual objects come together to create unified, coherent scenes and bodies.

Michal hopes you enjoy both her ceramic work and her jewelry as much as she enjoys creating it. - See more at her site www.michalgolan.com and check out her blog at http://www.michalgolangallery.com/blog/
