I have lost count at how many commission pieces Michelle has done for me. EVERY SINGLE PIECE she does is absolutely outstanding, emotion-filled, and moving. I am so grateful for her art because it’s a way to capture the happiness of an amazing memory or to pay tribute with honor for a lost loved one. She herself is also the sweetest which is an added bonus. Thanks Michelle, can’t wait for the next piece I order :)

Hauntingly and painfully beautiful. My eyes tear up and a lump forms in my throat whenever I look at it. It's framed and hanging in my office. Thank you for your powerful and moving artwork, Ms. Abernathy!

Beautiful art, spoken from the heart
Painting to heal...healing to paint.
How did I start being an artist? Did I ever “start”? Was there really some quintessential beginning? If there was, I’d just say simply “motherhood”. But not the actual start of my motherhood, but, rather, the desire deep down in my little child-soul. It was the heritage of my artistic mother and paternal-grandmother. It was the desire to create life, even though I wouldn’t have been able to identify it as that.
I’ve drawn and created as long as I can remember. Searching through crayon boxes for that right color. Gifts of art supplies from my brother (I still have one set that I can’t part with). Art class in high school, art camp, and finally a BA in Studio Art in college. I worked primarily in black and white realism, but motherhood cracked me open and colors came flowing out. And all those colors flow into the Now.
The Now began a little more than two years ago, when I began a healing journey. While laying on a massage table receiving cranio-sacral therapy, and grieving the long-ago-loss of my mother, a beautiful image came into my mind. I went home and promptly painted it. It was the piece where I found my style, where my heart found it’s way into paint, where I discovered that paint can play a part in healing. My work became prolific in this period, and friends and family urged me to make prints available. I set a year-long time-line with goals set for every 3 months or so, and now here I am.
I'm inspired by so many things: by faith, by nature, by women, by birth, by others' stories. It's amazing how healing can come in the most unlikely of ways. I love taking commissions and becoming a part of someone else's story - truly, it is always an honor to be entrusted with such a task.
Thank you for visiting my shop, sharing in my journey, and allowing me to share in yours. My prayer is that this art brings healing, light, and beauty to the world. My shop may change from time to time as I continue to figure out the right "feel".
